Alan Keyes' Daughter Coming Out
CBS News ^ | February 14, 2005

Posted on 02/14/2005 12:32:30 AM PST by RWR8189

(CBS) The 19-year-old daughter of Alan Keyes has a Valentine for the anti-gay rights conservative pundit and frequent Republican candidate.

Maya Marcel-Keyes will be making her first public appearance as a gay activist at a Valentine Day's rally in front of the Maryland State House, says Dan Furmansky, the leader of Equality Maryland, a gay rights group.

Last summer her father, a conservative pundit and frequent Republican candidate, caused a stir during the Republican convention by labeling Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter a sinner and calling homosexuality "selfish hedonism."

"It was kind of strange that he said it like a hypothetical," she told the Washington Post. "It was really kind of unpleasant."

Marcel-Keyes told the Post her parents have thrown her out of the house, stopped speaking to her and refuse to pay for college because she is gay. She said she loves her parents.

Keyes' Web site says he is against "the homosexual rights agenda, including same-sex marriage."

Marcel-Keyes grew up in Darnestown, Md., attended a conservative Catholic school for girls in McLean, Va., spent a year in the south of India advocating tribal rights, and plans to attend Brown University this fall, according to an Equality Maryland press release.

Furmansky told CBSNews.com that Marcel-Keyes would not be speaking to the media ahead of Monday's rally, and probably not afterward, either.

Bloggers have identified her Web site as http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=Xmisled0youthX. The author of the blog says it is public and she has nothing to hide.

I proved you wrong on the points I said you were wrong on. Something you are too cowardly and hypocritical to ever admit.

You proved that Keyes is in favor of reparations for blacks. YOU proved what I said.

The fact that you oppose a tax break proves that you are no conservative.

Let me get this straight:

YOU are in favor of racially-based tax breaks, and I'm not, and I'M the liberal?

To say that letting a citizen keep more of the money they earn is taking anything from someone else is Marxist to the core.

Allowing tax favors based on race is a racial preference.

You are now in favor of racial preferences?

No, I didn't miss your point. I agree with Dr. Keyes that the idea of reparations is bogus. The debt was paid with blood and treasure in the Civil War.

The Cheney's who I have always admired and still admire, seemed to have changed their view on homosexuality since discovering their daughter is one. Which to me is cowardly. If a behavior is wrong it's wrong no matter who engages in it.

I am sure Dr. Keyes loves his daughter very much. But he isn't going to change his beliefs and principles because his daughter doesn't adhere to them, nor will Dr. Keyes support behavior that he believes is very wrong, by supporting his daughter. If Maya doesn't want to respect and abide by her father's rules while living in her father's house and being supported by her father's earnings, Doctor Keyes is not required to maintain his end of the bargain.

In my humble opinion, Keyes' way of handling the situation is far more honest than the Cheney's. You don't change your own moral beliefs because your children have gone astray.

However, both families are entitled to deal with such problems the way they see fit. Regardless, I still respect both the Cheneys and the Keyes'.

I think you meant your comment for someone else. I just remember seeing her at some events and she was wearing "rainbow" clothing (possibly a matching hat and purse essemble).

I don't believe she was targeted, but I do believe that children from good families can go wrong. However, there is usally something, not always, but ususally some behavioral problem at home.

I'm going out on a limb here, but it could be that this young lady needed the care and warmth of an everyday father. Could be that Mr. Keyes schedule precluded that.

God says that if anybody differs with you about religion, "kill him."

A crude paraphrase, but yes, God commanded death for a number of infractions, including idolotry (and homosexuality by the way). Of course, that was BEFORE Jesus came and fulfilled the Law, and took the punishment we all deserved. In doing so, he introduced the Law of Grace, which he so eloquently displayed when the adulteress was brought before him (he who casts the first stone...) But of course you knew this already, didn't you? Which begs the question, why would you post something so flagrantly false? Because it was a quote by a famous orator and agnostic, so you figure it must be true?

It is that branch of conservatism known as social conservatism. Keyes is a prominent social conservative; hence their displeasure and disdain (even greater than the displeasure and disdain they have for Cheney).

Oh, roger that. My take is that homosexuality is like eating beets: I really, really find it repugnant, but if you don't force it on me it's none of my darn business whether you do it or not. But if you come to my house and call me an evil person for not being overjoyed at your beet-eating lifestyle, you're going to be flying out the front door, probably with a wedgie to boot.

BTW, thanks for your service. What did you do in the Air Force? I was a KC-135 crew chief.

I wonder why he didn't kick her out of the house during the election when this was given to him on a silver platter. Election doctrine?

Best question on the thread; this "news" was out there last summer while he was running -- and while he was trashing Mary Cheney.

How do you know she wasn't targeted? Do you deny that she would be an attractive target for people trying discredit Keyes and his conservative message?

He has not taken a private family matter public.

Precisely. Yet he had no problem discussing the Cheney family.

Allowing tax favors based on race is a racial preference.

If I didn't think you were a liar I'd have to conclude that you can't read. He precisely based tax breaks on ancestral servitude. His plan isn't really reparations it's rectitude.

I can think of other groups who would deserve this too, based on harm inflicted by the government. Descendants of interred Japanese. Descendants of Bonus Marchers and other WWI Vets who were screwed out of their promised war benefits.

But the lamest most liberalized POV that you reveal in your thinking is that a tax break would cost someone else something. Apparently you don't beleive that "W"'s tax breaks stimulate the economy. Or that Reagan's tax breaks stimulated the economy and resulted in the largest fastest increase in revenue in history. Or that JFK's tax breaks stimulated the economy in the '60's. Maybe you're just not a Reagan, Bush, Rush type economy theorist. More of a Kerry/Karl type I think.

The very opposite is the truth as spoken by Jesus himself.

Are you saying that Jesus Christ advised parents to stop relationships with their children if they disapproved of their behavior?

I expect Keyes would tell you his daughter is a selfish hedonist as well.

Then why didn't he? He had a live microphone in his hand. He could have informed the world while he was busy talking about Mary Cheney.

LOL!! Call it whatever you want. Keyes played right into the hands of the reparations sharks with his "tax break" idea. How many whites would this tax plan include?

You can put away your derogatory ad hominems, little man. Neither you nor Keyes fooled anybody with this contorted reparations idea. Every single conservative recognized it for what it was and ran away from it as fast as they could.

Tax breaks based on race are racial preferences. Period.

You can smear all the lipstick on it you want.

I'm not aware that the Cheneys are as strongly religious as are the Keyes. The high school Maya Keyes attended was affiliated with Opus Dei, which is on the conservative side of the Catholic spectrum. Alan Keyes has strongly identified with the social conservatism. Richard Cheney did not make such issues his principal cause while in Congress, or as Vice President.

He was asked (baited into it, really, by a gay activist with an agenda) a question about Cheney qua lesbian. He stated his honest opinion that lesbianism is hedonistic.

I agree with his opinion. Don't you?
