WPT to Air Postcards From Buster Episode Withdrawn by PBS

Feb. 9, 2005

For More Information:
Michael Bridgeman, (608) 265-3855
James Steinbach, (608) 263-1232

Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) will air the "Sugartime" episode of Postcards From Buster at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27.

"We've reviewed the program and believe it is consistent with Wisconsin Public Television's mission to educate diverse audiences of children and adults," said James Steinbach, director of programming and production.

The episode was withdrawn from distribution by PBS after some objected to content believed to be inappropriate for children. The series producers have made the episode available to stations to air at their discretion.

"We also respect the right of parents to make viewing choices for their own families, so that's why we've scheduled it at a time when parents can decide if and how they want their children to watch the program," Steinbach said.

WPT regularly airs Postcards From Buster at 3 p.m. weekdays. Like all episodes of the series, Steinbach said, "Sugartime" focuses on the children. Postcards From Buster involves a cartoon rabbit traveling around the country and interacting with children and their families. These families are real people, shown in live-action footage, talking about their lives.

The Feb. 27 broadcast focuses on maple sugaring in Vermont where Buster meets children from two families who have two mothers, a situation that has raised objections from some. Steinbach said that most calls to WPT have supported airing the program.

Steinbach said Postcards From Buster is designed to help children understand and appreciate the rich and varied cultures that make up the United States, and to support the language skills of elementary school-age children for whom English is a second language.

Different episodes have profiled children from backgrounds including a Hmong family in Wisconsin.

Buster has met children living in a variety of family structures, including traditional two-parent households, children splitting time between divorced parents, children living with grandparents and children living with single parents.

From the FCC page

Obscenity, Indecency, & Profanity
It’s against the Law!
It is a violation of federal law to broadcast obscene programming at any time. It is also a violation of federal law to broadcast indecent programming during certain hours. Congress has given the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the responsibility for administratively enforcing the law that governs these types of broadcasts. The Commission may revoke a station license, impose a monetary forfeiture, withhold or place conditions on the renewal of a broadcast license, or issue a warning, for the broadcast of obscene or indecent material.

Obscene Broadcasts are Prohibited at all Times

Obscene speech is not protected by the First Amendment and cannot be broadcast at any time. To be obscene, material must meet a three-prong test:

An average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest;......

I would have no problem with the programming; if it was not funded by tax payers and if any parents who let their children view it were prosecuted for Child Endangerment.

I don't even know where to start. Every time a homo is mentioned in the popular media, these boards explode with ignorance and misunderstanding.

As someone who grew up queer in northern Wisconsin, I did not have any positive homo role models. Not in life nor on the TV. By the time I hit 18, AIDS starting to show up around the country and in the media. That was the first time I every say another gay man--and he was dying.

Personally, I am overjoyed every time I see a lesbian or a gay man in the media. It makes me feel that I'm not so alone.

I really don't care if you accept us or not. I'm just glad that more and more folks learn that there are homos in the world. A lot more homos than you think.

OK, thus ends my rant.

Frist let me say that I am a lot of things but I am not a homophobe. I believe homosexuality is learned and not born. You were not born "queer". No, really.
I am sorry that you didn't have any "positive homo role models". But I am even more truly sorry that you didn't have any straight role models. You must have been very confused and lonely growing up. Just in case nobody told you, homosexuality is wrong and I will be praying for you Greenback.

I'm not going to get into a whole debate about the short circuited beliefs of homosexuality. I will however defend my children's right to be children and not allow the seed of homosexuality be planted by some stupid cartoon before they even know what sex is. The subliminal and confusing situation of two "mommys" is not necessary to show how maple syrup is made. The gay agenda needs to quit preying on our children!!! I wont stand still for it.

RevelationCS, you are absolutely right. As I stood there putting up my first flyer I realized that all the children on the playground could and would read it. hmmm. Didn't put any up. pondering my next move since I hadn't thought out a plan B yet. . . any ideas?

Greeenback....

It is my belief that the gay lifestyle is a sin, and it is due to that belief and my commitment to raise my children in the way that reflects my religious beliefs that leads me to make these decisions. I am in no way a bigot, nor will I condemn you as a person for your choices, but please, do not force your (or your lifestyles) way upon my kids with the likes of these subliminal messages via the public media. This is what I have a problem with and I hope that it is understood that this is in no way an attack against you as a person, but against an choice/action which I feel is immoral and wrong.

"We've reviewed the program and believe it is consistent with Wisconsin Public Television's mission to educate diverse audiences of children and adults," said James Steinbach, director of programming and production.

"Immediately afterward, we will air the Old Testament program that is traditionally shown each day," Steinbach added. /sarcasm
