The idea of the Sabbath in Judaism is a very interesting commandment. Most people believe the reason for it is so that it gives the observer some "time out" for reflection, prayer and contemplation, instead of the routine of day to day life.. This is true. However, the other spiritual idea behind observing the Sabbath is to give up one's desire to control and manipulate the reality around one's self, and just to trust the benevolence, expansiveness, stability and order of the universe.

This state of child-like innocence and trust is very hard for some people to achieve as they are riddled with fears and compulsions which make them manically try and manipulate the people, places and things around them.

When give ourselves up to the divine goodness of the universe, we see that in-fact reality and Planet Earth was created for humankind to literally make a Ganeden. That is what the Creator wants us to do. He wants all of God's children to live in peace, happiness and health.

Prayers for another one of God's children, Pope John Paul II.

I love this Pope, but have my doubts he has been speaking for himself for a long time.

Our ultimate goal in this life is to achieve life everlasting and to eventually dwell in the presence of Our Lord. The Pope suffers much and it's painful to watch him struggle to maintain his dignity.

Buckley doesn't hope for the Pope to die, he hopes for him to gain eternal life... quickly. Anyone who's outraged at this just isn't aware of Buckley's matter-of-fact approach to Catholic belief and his penchant for practical, unusual suggestions.

Buckley must be almost as old as the Pope is, so this column is pretty brave; one of his favorite sayings is "Who says A must say B", so this is advice he may have to take himself in the near future.

William F. Buckley is a devout Catholic. He is abstaining from praying for the Pope. In the Pope's present health, he may be suffering. I don't think Buckley is out of line on this. I would bet Buckley prays that God's will be done.

Exactly. Buckley has made the most intelligent and reasoned comments on the Pope's recent health troubles.

OK, we all hope the Pope lives as long as God wants him to, right?

But at what point does the declining health of the Pope mandate that all those praying for him, cease praying for 'recovery' and pray for God's Will to be done?

The fact is, Buckley has said that which nobody else has the nerve to say. And while it is easy to call Buckley a 'buffoon' and other epithets, the truth is, Buckley, even in his advanced years can run intellectual circles around most people, including most of us right here on FR. I saw Buckley debate George McGovern at the University of Florida in 1991, and he was no spring chicken then - and he still chewed McG up into little pieces and did it with class and a smile on his face.

I daresay that God will consider Buckley's sincerely offered prayers because they were sent up with logic and compassion, not with some automatic kneejerk reaction of 'oh please, please, please HEAL the Pope...HEAL our 84 year old Pope!'

Pray for God's Will to be done. His Will might be to bring Pope John Paul II on home after a long life spent serving Him.

In fact, Buckley, in his arrogance, appears to say that he knows better than God when someone, in this case, Pope John Paul should "move on"....whose to say that Pope John Paul wouldn't jump out of his bed tomorrow and run five miles...and how many miracles are left for the Pope before he passes on??? And how much more work does God have on this earth for Pope John Paul? Do you know? Does Mister Arrogance Buckley know? NO, you don't know and Buckley doesn't know either!
So, you and Buckley and the rest of you "know it alls" should leave God's work up to God!

Yeah, that's a weird column, to say the least, from WFB. To pray "long live the Pope" seems natural, of course with "Thy will be done" -- but to pray for his death -- against his wishes, no less -- even with "Thy will be done" -- that's not right.

If you've listened to anything to Pope has said the last several years you would know that he does not consider his state one of misery.

I am not in a position to judge anyones faith. To be honest, I don't exactly understand why Buckley wrote this as so many people would obviously see this in a negative light. Buckley stands tall as a Catholic. Give Buckley the benefit of the doubt. He is a man of faith.
