Condoleezza Rice: A fascinating figure on the world front
The Columbia, MIssouri Daily Trib. ^ | Sunday, February 13, 2005 | HENRY J. WATERS iii

Posted on 02/13/2005 8:56:05 AM PST by rface

But Condoleezza Rice is sailing like a jet-powered butterfly among our potential allies-for-peace, creating a better atmosphere. Within her purview, this is all, and more, than we could have expected......Dang that George W. Bush. Just when we were cooking up a good hate, he enters his second term and seems to be mellowing a bit.

Regardless of what you think about every Bush administration policy, surely you believe new Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is getting a great start.

She’s everywhere, already having made a tour of Europe and the Middle East, seeming to make progress wherever she goes.

You can’t measure it by treaties signed, but she gets difficult world leaders smiling at her - and at the United States and each other.

I can just imagine how the likes of German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier are put in a receptive mood by the arrival of the petite, perfectly coifed and tailored, highly intelligent and articulate - and French-speaking - youngish black woman representing the United States. The ice is bound to start out broken.

Without trying to recount every word or action Rice has taken in the past few weeks, more to the point is the impression she is leaving in behalf of our country. Upon taking office, she said it was time for a new round of diplomacy. Sure, we all said, show me. Well, we are being shown.

One person, even the secretary of state, can’t accomplish miracles or even force accommodation. But Condoleezza Rice is sailing like a jet-powered butterfly among our potential allies-for-peace, creating a better atmosphere. Within her purview, this is all, and more, than we could have expected.

Dang that George W. Bush. Just when we were cooking up a good hate, he enters his second term and seems to be mellowing a bit. Does he realize now he need not roll over so readily for the most rightward cadre in his party?

With the appointment of Rice, he is in much the same posture as was former President Richard Nixon, whose conservative bona fides gave him a political imprimatur for making overtures to archenemy China.

So Bush, the terror-warrior-and-damn-what-the-French-and-Germans-think commander in chief sends the perfect emissary off to repair relations. The righties love her because she is such a confidant and friend of the president. The rest of us like her because she seems to represent a newer and gentler approach to international relations.

Out front he still sounds rather stubborn and bellicose. Behind the curtain, is the Wizard surreptitiously becoming more moderate? Shhh. Don’t tell anyone.

Waters (the paper's publisher and writer of this article) is a middle-of-the-roader with libertarian views. He's not a Bush hater, nor a Bush lover ..... and his views on politics tends to correlate with the views of America's squishy middle - the party straddlers. The Liberals see Condi making inroads into America's political middle - and that's why Liberal Democratics hate her

Yes, for that reason, and also the fact that she is a BLATANT EXAMPLE in the face of the far-left of how sucsessful a black woman can be, when she WANTS TO BE. The libs fear that image too -- anything that suggests that black people can LIVE WITHOUT THE LIBERALS!!!!

or that application of one's skills, intelligence and a lot of work can open doors to success. Sheesh, if everyone did that what would happen to the welfare rolls?

Well, that is THE PROBLEM (amongst others) we have with the opportunistic liberals -- they WANT A WELFARE STATE, wrought with GOVERNMENT DEPENDENCY so they can continue to BUY VOTES WITH TAXPAYERS MONEY. The core of their existence.

"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee"

I'm amazed at how the Rice's message has gone sailing over the heads of some writers. They were so sure that Powell's way was the wisest course and that Rice, being so closely aligned with "that cowboy", would be a disaster.

Truth will out (and I don't think some, like this writer, are really listening to what she's been saying, but that's OK for now).

You just don't get it, do you? She is a member of a discriminated-against minority. And everyone knows that minorities cannot accomplish anything without the help of rich, white massa....er, liberals!

Good grief,man! Get with the program!< /sarcasm>

Amazing how these people are so superficial. The president hasn't mellowed. Infact his new SOS is far more hardline in foreign policy than Colin Powell ever was. Yet because she has a different "look" they comfort themselves with the idea he was moderated his tone even though language definitely proves otherwise.

This is no different than when they assume a Republican with a Texan accent is a simpleton. Isn't truth, but fits their caricature of how the world "is".

I'll admit it bothers me, but on the other hand it's a useful tool. MisUnderestimating the President has given him distinct advantages. Assuming Condi is representative of a moderate stance, allows us to get away with being even more hardline. They'll believe their perception rather than the reality. Condi having many of the accomplishments elites in Europe treasure will have its benefits as well.

And all this right after Barbara Boxer and her fellow Democrats tried to diminish Rice bot nationally and internationally.
Democrats even broke a no vote record for a Secretary of State in existence since 1825.
It shows how effective these grand standers are these days.
