President Viktor Yushchenko met Feb. 11 with a U.S. congressional delegation that included two prominent U.S. senators who have nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The 11-member delegation that included Sens. Hillary Clinton and John McCain discussed ways to strengthen U.S.-Ukrainian relations, develop democratic values in this ex-Soviet state and the new government's plans to attract foreign investment, Yushchenko's office said.
In meetings with parliament speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn, McCain said they also discussed assistance in the clean-up of the 1986 Chornobyl disaster and U.S. assistance to Ukraine in its efforts to join the World Trade Organization and the European Union.
Clinton, a liberal Democrat and the wife of former President Bill Clinton, and McCain, a conservative Republican, last month nominated Yushchenko and Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili for the Nobel Peace Prize. In their nomination letter, the senators commended the presidents for winning "popular support for the universal values of democracy, individual liberty and civil rights."
Both men came to power after mass demonstrations protesting fraudulent votes in their former Soviet republics.
"Both presidents not only deserve that recognition on behalf of themselves, but they are really being nominated because of what they, together with the people of Georgia and Ukraine, have done," Clinton told journalists in Kyiv.
Yushchenko and the U.S. delegation also discussed Ukraine's plans to withdraw its 1,650 peacekeepers from Iraq. The Ukrainian leader told the U.S. lawmakers that the country would first discuss the issue with its coalition partners and the Iraqi government, his press office said.
A total of 16 Ukrainian soldiers have died in Iraq and its involvement in the U.S.-led mission is deeply unpopular among Ukrainians.
The U.S. delegation also met with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

On Friday, February 11, 2005 a U.S. delegation headed by Republican Senator John McCain will visit Ukraine.
Included in the delegation will be Senator Joseph Lieberman (Democrat-Connecticut]), Hillary Clinton (Democrat-New York), Lindsey Graham (Republican-South Carolina) and members of the House of Representatives, Howard Berman (Democrat-California), Jane Harman (Democrat-California), Ellen Tauscher (Democrat-California), John Larson (Democrat-Connecticut), Mark Udall (Republican-Utah), and John Schwartz (Democrat-Pennsylvania).

I bet that they went there to encourage Ukraine to withdraw their troops from Iraq ASAP.
Isn't it the GOP's own fault for letting the Dems pile on? We need to be letting Yushchenko know where the power is in this country.

Hillary Clinton after her business lunch with the Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko admitted that her visit to Ukraine was one of the best visits to this country ever, UNIAN informs.
That’s what she said, “I express my admiration with my present trip to Ukraine. This is my 3d visit to Ukraine and it turned out to be the happiest one”.
She added,” I have seen the results of the struggle for democracy”. Hillary Clinton wished good luck to the president of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko and the Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
Hillary Clinton assured that the USA remains the partner of Ukraine. “God bless Ukraine”, – she said.
During their meeting with Tymoshenko American Senators expressed confidence that Ukraine from nowadays would be the democratic country, which would follow human rights and democratic liberties. And this is just the beginning.
One of the main points of the meeting was the cancellation of Jakson –Venik amendment.
American guests completely agreed with the Prime Minister’s arguments and expressed hope that the amendment of Jakson –Venik would be cancelled in near future.
As the press-centre reports after the official part of the meeting Tymoshenko had a friendly talk with Hillary Clinton.

He's pro-West alright: pro: Germany, France, Spain, Belgium and the EU in general. They had to use a stick to beat him off he came on so strong for immediate EU membership.

The fruit was poisoned from the get go: lets see the progressive Yushchenko's line up: his PM is a "self-made" former civil servant who made herself $11 billion while running the gas industry (in 5 years that's about $2 million every day and that's her personal money), his next two is another oligarch and the head of the socialist party. Yup, he's definitly the Hillary kind.
They can't speed it up that much. Yushchenko promised he'd pull the troops out by the end of the year during his campaign.
