Though she barely escaped prosecution just a few years ago for making false statements to federal investigators, New Yorkers now believe that Sen. Hillary Clinton is a truthful person.
Nearly two-thirds of Empire Staters - 64 percent - told a Quinnipiac University survey last week that the former first lady was "honest and trustworthy." Thirty percent disagreed.
Even among Republicans, 38 percent gave Hillary high marks for honesty. Among Democrats, the figure was a sky-high 85 percent.
Quinnipaic's polling director Maurice Carroll said Hillary's new honesty numbers were a big improvement from the old days.
"When Clinton took office four years ago, her husband had just pardoned Marc Rich and the Clintons were accused of looting White House furniture," he noted. Sounding somewhat bewildered, Carroll mused, "Now? Two-thirds of New Yorkers say she's a good - and honest - Senator."
'Honest' Hillary's new image also has to come as a shock to former independent counsel Robert Ray, who nearly indicted her for lying in the Travelgate scandal.
"Mrs. Clinton . . . played a role in the decision to fire the [travel office] employees and thus, her statement to the contrary under oath to this office is factually false," Ray said in his final report on the imbroglio.
Despite the scathing conclusion, the top lawman gave the first lady the benefit of the doubt and didn't file charges, saying he couldn't prove she knew her testimony was false.
Ray's predecessor, Ken Starr, also came perilously close to fling charges against Hillary for her Whitewater fibs.
In their book "Truth at any Cost," reporters Susan Schmidt and Michael Weisskopf detailed a 1998 meeting between Starr's lead prosecutor Hickman Ewing and his legal team in Little Rock, where they weighed indicting Hillary:
"[Ewing] paced the room for more than three hours, recalling facts from memory," Schmidt and Weisskopf reported. "He spoke passionately, laying out a case that the first lady had obstructed government investigators and made false statements about her legal work for [Jim] McDougal's S&L, particularly the thrift's notorious multimillion-dollar Castle Grande real estate project."
However, Ewing's case against Mrs. Clinton had been severely weakened by the fact that Mr. McDougal had died a month before.
"Without him, prosecutors would have a hard time describing the S&L dealings they suspected Hillary Clinton had lied about," Schmidt and Weisskopf said.
Another person sure to be shocked by Hillary's new reputation for honesty is media mogul Steven Brill, who accused her of falsely claiming she helped 9/11 victim families while he was writing his 2003 book, "After."
Brill told WABC Radio that her staff had provided him with "an elaborate story, with an elaborate subtext of memos and phone calls - a long, long story" detailing Hillary's meetings with 9/11 relatives.
But after checking with the families themselves, Brill said, "None of it turned out to be true . . . They gave me documents and phone calls and things like that which just plain never happened."
Carl, do you have the transcript where she said "I can't recall" and other similar phrases under oath some 50 times?
The New York MSM is breathtakingly awesome in its covering (up) for Hillary. She NEVER is asked a real quesion, the interviews/"reporting" is 100% puff piece PR, and she was portrayed in a full page illustration in the NY Times Magazine as (I kid you not) Saint Joan of Arc.
Blue district polling specialists.
NY is, after all, one of the blue-est of Blue states. The HillaBeast and NY are a match made in heaven.
Oops! Should have said "match made in h*ll."
This poll doesn't surprise me, and I do think it's an honest poll at that. They overwhelmingly elected her as their Senator. The state of NY is gone with the rest of the northeast.
Hillary is playing her cards right, which should scare most conservatives in 2008.
Ha! I'm not a New Yorker, but I live in NY, and they didn't poll me!
In New York, You can fool people some of the time
and the rest of the people all the time. Look
at their two Senators...they both would make it
as co-owners of a Pawn sShop....they look upon
the people as pawns....LOL. Jake
Is there any documentation of the poll being done in the Hasidic community? If so, that should destroy the credibility of that poll due to the sheer disconnect between the Hasidic weltanschaung and mainstream American political perspectives.
Did the poll announce the results as indicative of just the Hasidic community or of Americans in general?
In closing, for the Hasidic community to have sold its vote should be a matter of great concern to them. As Jews, they should have known that along with observation of the 617 mitzvahs, there is the central obligation to live as an example of the law - among which are the near universal prohibitions against corruption.
Not to mention the dangers of accepting Federal monies because of the many strings, some of which will conflict with their narrow religious practices.
Maybe it was just her family that was polled. Actually, in NY all they have to do to get their desired results is to ask residents of the cities. For example, Erie County, arguably the most screwed up in NY went for Kerry last November but when you look at the results on a town-by-town basis, it was very much like the country as a whole. Most of the counties towns voted for Bush but it was the city with its "palms-up crowd" that gave the county to Kerry. I'd bet that it was this way across most of the state. Since Clinton would be running on a national basis, it would be more revealing if true, random samples were taken across the US. NY and the northeast is FUBAR due to the left, which is why the demographics favor Republicans (although many Republicans are socialists themselves).
Huge poster/pictures, in her face, of Vince Foster and Jim McDougal.
Isn't that a great idea?
Shouldn't be a shocker; after all, they elected the little criminal after she carpet-bagged her way into the state. What's the surprise? That's New England.
Is there something wrong with the New England states? McGovern, Kerry, Kennedy, Dukakis, Clinton, Rangel, Barny Franks, Sharpton, Dodd, (add your own). Have they no pride, common decency, or morals when they vote?
Ummmmmm. Have a bit more coffee this morning.
It was a joke. I meant to demonstrate my lack of confidence in the survey sample's honesty by making what I thought would be an obviously ridiculous statement.
I have absolutely zero indication that it was done even partially in that Hasidic community (which really exists and really did vote in lock step for Hillary in her election - there was an investigation, but they couldn't prove any criminal act occurred).
That is absolutely an impossibility!
"NO WAY, JOSE"!!!
Of course they would say they think Hiltery is honest ... if they answered otherwise, they would have to explain voting for someone they believe is dishonest. So ... the beat goes on ... and the voters of NY are now lying. I believe none of this ...
Don't forget two left wings.
Exactly, they are so stupid, they go and elect someone from out of state. The money and all the action is in the city, the rest of the state is a morgue.

If ADOLF HITLER had had TV up his sleeve, the way the CLINTONS do today, he would have won World War II.
