Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

It wouldn't be hard to remedy. Just as the "Minuteman Project" could easily help itself out by unequivocally stating in bold that Stormfront types are absolutely reviled and unwelcome.

I think they did that recently on a TV special in San Diego. You will have to pardon me. My knowledge of everything from "the shall not mention sites" to MinuteMan to Stormfront is only about 4 days old now. I never had much reason to bone up on such places but I guess I had better now. I know Malkin and Coulter link to one of the shall not mentions at least....not to Stormfront obviously.

I am vehemently against illegal immigration. But I am even more vehemently against racism and vigilantism. I don't know whether the Minuteman Project is racist, but I do consider it vigilantism. That's just my opinion. If you wish to support them that's your choice.

And the House and Senate are right now rejecting W's quasi-amnesty as we speak.

btw....as much as many here would love to think....immigration is not about race....it's about a lot of things besides race.....like magnitude, legality and culture....and 30 million lilywhite Ukrainians would alter that just the same.

Michelle Malkin links to and is featured in vdare. I always thought it was because she was a conservative asian woman because I've never seen any black conservatives in there. Ann Coulter I don't know about. She's full of err... fire to say the least. I went to the Minuteman Project website and didn't see anything unseemly there. The republican party has some unsavory people in it. That doesn't mean the message is wrong.

I do not consider my self a racist(as in being a Supremacist) but I am a chauvinistic regionalist and a believer that the British traditions that founded our nation are paramount and the world's best....far and away so.

But I must confess. My moral compass does not instinctively flutter between RACIST or NON-RACIST regarding any synapse of thought that passes thru me feeble mind. Maybe it's age or generational. I'm 47 now and I was very idealistic and judgmental of imperfection in my youth...alas a liberal once obviously.

But no....I don't think racism or ethnocentricity are the absolute worst humanity has to offer. Racism can produce very bad things but I have never known anyone who did not identify with their race, ethnicity, religion or even usually gender. This "new man" devoid of the usual human flaws sounds mighty messianic and humanist and all that sort of stuff and I just don;t buy it.

And I have lived in environments where race matterd very much...even down to tribal affiliation in matters of life and death.

Only in America are we so naive...or perhaps arrogant to think we are above or beyond it all.

We are not. Just examine our cities for a second. Much of them are unsafe for me at nite in place simply because I am white. In a perfect world...I would prefer colorblind but that is not going to happen now. The allure of victimhood is a siren call for too many....the victims and their vicarious sympathizers.

Like I said....I know little about these joints except what I perused after they cam up here.

I do know that NeoNazis have tried to infiltrate border groups much like they have here....beyond that I don't know much. I live in nashville ...home to many immigrants...some like the Kurds to whom we gave safe haven and plenty of Mexicans....now more Mexicans than blacks...remarkable for a Southern city.

JR has said he against vigilantism ...ok....they could be considered that but they are not stringing folks up that I know of.

Are neighborhood patrols or business security or even Pinkertons or Kroll considered vigilantes too?
