The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.
The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.
Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.
Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.
Only technically. The spanish culture didn't really extend up here and the settlers were only technically citizens of Mexico. That's why it is silly for the Aztlaners to try to claim this area for Aztlan. And, you know, Utah and Colorado used to also technically be a part of Mexico too. So what? Maybe you missed a few facts in my post. Sierra Vista was founded in 1953, far beyond any Spanish influence in the area and the roads named with Mexican names were named well after 1953 - most within the last 10-20 years. If anything, there would be influence of various Indian tribes, not any Spanish influence in the area. It's just not here except for the fact that Coronado once traipsed through here.
No, you are pro-illegal immigration. You support the status quo which is out of control illegal immigration. Therefore, you support illegal immigration. A = B = C
There's nothing wrong with opposing birth citizenship. Especially, if you knew that many illegals come across pregnant just to squeeze out a baby who gets instant citizenship. Now the family has some claim to American - it's called chain migration and it sucks. We are the only country in the world with birth citizenship and it is time to relook that policy. What is "kooky" is to continue what we're doing, allowing unfettered legal and illegal immigration without putting any thought to what we're doing to ourselves.

I'm not going to waste time arguing with you. Last figures I saw showed that we had an average of one guard for each five miles of the Canadian border and seven guards for each mile of the Mexican border. Still, only an estimated one third of the southern border jumpers get caught. Doubling or quadrupling the guard isn't going to stop the border jumpers.
Instead of being idiots and trying to do something impossible such as seal the border, it is smarter and more effective to concentrate our resources on the transit points leading to the border, starting in the middle east and Asia. No knowledgeable person believes that a fence would do any good at all on the vast desolate mountains and deserts of the border. Even the short Tijuana border gets breached daily by numerous laborers and it has fences, patrol roads, motion sensors, flood lights, planes, helicopters, atvs, uavs, and horseback patrols.
And if we could magically seal the Mexican border, laborers would just come by the gulf coast. Can we seal the coast?
No, we should annex them.
read the column found by link on post #1898 and tell me the author doesn't have a better grasp of our borders than some of the "conservatives" on FR.
What makes you believe that closing the borders is unworkable.

Bottom line:
They are not conservatives. They race bait as well as any Democrat and only view themselves as conservative because they voted for GW......which of course beat Kerry by leagues no doubt.
Some have a personal axe to grind as in they are a minority themselves and are bitter.
All of the "we don't admit we are open borders/pro amnesty " congregation have been emboldened here by the purge but W's plan is done for. Some Pubbies finally grew a spine and we are going to get a tougher policy.
So they can dance all they want. They won here but lost in the real world.

You are absolutely right, it is possible to shut down the border. I can shut down parts of the border by myself. We had a five man team shut down 70 miles of I-8 to vehicle bourn smuggling. In addition, they prosecuted 200 smugglers in a year. How many LEO 5 man teams have ever prosecuted 200 criminals? It's even more amazing when you consider how unpolitcally correct the job is. Of course, they were disbanded for their trouble.

The illegal immigration threads have been some of the nastier exchanges....and I remain conflicted.
There are millions of illegals who are decent, hardworking lovely people - (not all Hispanic) and I wish there was a way to help them participate in the American dream absent the criminal act of entering the USA without authorization.
I do not have the solution - I respect that President Bush is struggling with one.

The citizens of any country through an elected government should have to righ to say who is allowed and who is not allowed entrance to their country.
You seem quite eager to pronounce those who disagree with you as "unconservative". Who the hell appointed YOU the arbiter of who is and is not conservative?
