Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

So, in other words, it is better for a country right next to ours to explode than it is to try to keep the situation under control.

Do you have ANY idea what group would take over once that explosion happens? And what should be done until that mess settles down? Because a LOT more folks will be headed north once that happens. Are we going to turn them back? Will sending people back into a civil war fly with the American people? I doubt it.

I don't think letting Mexico explode would be a course of action that would provide a solution to the issue.

I don't think building new walls akin to the Berlin wall is the "right" thing to do. I'll stand with with Ronald Reagan and his speech that was actually heard around the world, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall".

Big difference. "Mr. Gorbachov's" fence was keeping people hostage, captives to the savages within. Our's would be preventing the wave of criminals from entering to become a subculture, making us hostages to that subculture within our own nation. A fence would be PROTECTING the freedoms inside the fence, OUR freedoms, keeping us from becoming captive hostages of the savages from without. Let's see....20,000,000 illegals at a cost of $1700, each that's $34 BILLION. We can buy and police a lot of fence for that amount.

"I know I am going to draw fire with this comment, but there is a whole lot of equivalency here between the people who oppose Christmas and threaten the ability of private enterprises (and even private homes) to display Christian Christmas symbols on their property, and the people who have just scored a 'victory' when the Oklahoma State legislature made it illegal for private employers to set rules as to whether or not to allow weapons on their property."

Unbeknownst to me as the the identity of the poster, I got this far in reading this inane analogy, and looked up and spotted: Luis Gonzalez...

Why am I NOT surprised??

I'm a little reluctant to see things in cultural terms. Quite frankly, the cultural agrument has been used to denigrate past groups of immigrants - Italians, Jews, and Irish all come to mind right away.

How long did it take you to write that post?

At $500/hour, I think the forum now owes you roughly $100.

Never a dull moment. Incidentally, I have loved watching the new Battlestar Galactica. Amazing psychological study on the character of Baltar.. how he committed treason while unaware that his actions were necessarily treasonous.. at least until he realized the impact of what he'd done, then even he admitted it.. Great show. Sure it would be unpopular among some of the ivory tower types... LOL.

To: everyone

I didn’t know where to post but this seemed to be where everyone is. Anyway, I’ll start.
Hi, just found your site yesterday. Recommended by a friend. I think I may have just found a new cyber-political home. What a great site! Let me express my opinions and beliefs as so many of you have. Then you can tell me if I should stay.
This is the greatest Nation the world has ever known and these are the greatest years our Republic has yet known. We have Freedom on the march half a world away. The shock and awe (I’m x WSA), Corpritization, and democratization of Iraq it’s oil fields and it’s people. We have done so much already. (& Only 2 years!) To bring them modernization and prosperity. It will go down in History (whether it’s Oil ever flows or not) as a triumph for our Republic. Honoring our 1400 + dead and 10,000 + wounded forever. Even if my Grandchildren’s children have to fight – We will. Rid the world of the Terrorists and bring freedom. Our President said this will be multi-generational and I believe in him. I say we go double or nothing and go after the rest of the terrorists in Iran. Maybe we can get their oil to flow and pay for both Iran and Iraq.
On the economy, all of the numbers look very good, thanks to the tax cuts of ’01. I bought a new car (Hummers) 2 over the last 3 years. (Case in point!) Now the commie Dems are all so worried about the “behemoth” Fed Debt. Debt is Good for the economy. The more the better. Besides, all those stagnant SS funds have needed to go on budget since FDR. As for the recent shift from Domestic to DOD spending the world’s Freedom isn’t Free! It will take sacrifice. Like making ‘pill splitting’ policy for Medicare. Cut law-enforcement, and education. If we had school vouchers and private health accounts we could further gut domestic spending. Those Italian schools aren’t cheap, please help.
Geo-politically we are supported respected and feared; the ones who don’t should be boycotted. (They already boycott us) Including Canada (all three providences) the French and most of Europe (east and west) most of Central and South America Russia Australia China The middle east (except for our 3 countries) etc. etc. etc. These Countries are against Freedom, and everything America believes in, and the very spreading of Freedom/Democracy. If you are not with us you are with the Terrorists. It is the least you could do for America, and our President George W Bush, in this new American Century and Millennium.
Domestically, Torte reform (or abolishment) Now. We cannot allow frivolous lawsuits to slow the homeland’s economic engine, the greatest in the world!
Chemicals, PCBs, asbestos etc. are just the chance you take. Harden up, Girlieman. Surgeons make mistakes too; they are only human. We need to completely de-regulate. Mergers promote efficiency and competitiveness. Enron’s few bad apples may make this difficult but it must happen for the good of the country and the economy. The AQMD and the EPA have no business being funded by our Government! It’s counterproductive. I drink lots of Beer and Coke anyway.
So, on global warming- a Complete fraud perpetuated by vast numbers of (left wing conspiracy) commie scientists. Even if there was a shred of truth to it, I’m confident my great grandchildren can fix it.
All this leftie talk of a Draft (Conscription) floating under the radar at some MSMs – there will be No Draft! Even if we free Iran we don’t need more kids. We have tech. Barring all unforeseen circumstances i.e. the Iranian MRMs even those crazy terrorist Mullahs aren’t That crazy. We would just Nuke the county flat. All 50 Million. It would be a suicide bombing on a massive scale. Even They are not that crazy. If it does come down to a mass draft we already have the perfect demographic to fight a nuclear war. We’ve got the gays! 10% of the population right there! Since Bush and Chaney have said they are for Civil Unions for the gays they should also be for Conscription for the gays. Give them their own division or 3. That bill for draft in Congress now – just another commie smoke screen.
The President has made extraordinary progress in banning Abortion in his term. We must continue to back him in this fight for another 4 years.
Outsourcing jobs is good for our Economy. Now I’m no economist, and I haven’t been able to fully understand this. I said I’m no economist! But our President said it. I believe it. That settles it.
We must expand the Patriot act. We must fully remove the right to privacy and due process all of those commie leftists are hiding behind. What are they so afraid of? What are they hiding? Patriot act II Now!
Lastly, on this massive liberal welfare state, Abolish it. Only the strong survive. That’s natural unregulated capitalism. They will work when they are starving. Capitalism will harden those little girlie men or cast them on the heap. We have a glut of immigrant labor that can pick up the slack of the sissies. $2.50 an hour and No Taxes! We must focus for generations to come to spread our values, beliefs, and freedom around the world. Winning the hearts and minds of the People in terrorist breeding grounds all over the globe. We have many more countries to liberate over the coming decades. We have a long, long way to go. With God’s guidance we will prevail. If after reading this you feel like-minded, feel free to let me know. Hope to hear from you all. God bless you and our President. P.s. Looks like home to me!
Sincerely,
Texas KEK

Your points are well made. It is one thing to oppose , or at least question open borders , especially now. Illegal immigration is , well, obvious. What sets this forum apart, minus the stormfronters and the like, is the desire to find a workable solution to a problem that has festered and grown for decades. Cursing the President and dreaming of President Pat or Ross is counterproductive at the least.
The desire to assault those who lack the "purity "of thought is an indication of a much deeper problem, something Free Republic is not designed for. We are a Conservative forum. We are not the Democrats, we are not the Flat Earth society.

Jim, the article from that "other" operation sounded as bad as the squeals from the Leftist side of the spectrum. Perhaps they are soulmates of the DU?

Now...post one comment of mine promoting illegal immigration.

It will never happen. I and many others are accused daily of supporting illegal immigration and "open borders" and yet when we ask for proof, either nothing is forthcoming or they dodge the issue.

It is the classic case of "You don't agree with me 100% therefore you must be taking the opposite position 100%". In other words, some people think that if you don't agree with them on every single aspect relating to immigration, then you're supporting illegal immigration and are for "open borders".

"Quite frankly, the cultural agrument has been used to denigrate past groups of immigrants - Italians, Jews, and Irish all come to mind right away."

"I am perfectly of your mind, that measures of great Temper are necessary with the Germans: and am not without Apprehensions, that thro' their indiscretion or Ours, or both, great disorders and inconveniences may one day arise among us; Those who come hither are generally of the most ignorant Stupid Sort of their own Nation, and as Ignorance is often attended with Credulity when Knavery would mislead it, and with Suspicion when Honesty would set it right; and as few of the English understand the German Language, and so cannot address them either from the Press or Pulpit, 'tis almost impossible to remove any prejudices they once entertain. Their own Clergy have very little influence over the people; who seem to take an uncommon pleasure in abusing and discharging the Minister on every trivial occasion. Not being used to Liberty, they know not how to make a modest use of it; and as Kolben says of the young Hottentots, that they are not esteemed men till they have shewn their manhood by beating their mothers, so these seem to think themselves not free, till they can feel their liberty in abusing and insulting their Teachers. Thus they are under no restraint of Ecclesiastical Government; They behave, however, submissively enough at present to the Civil Government which I wish they may continue to do: For I remember when they modestly declined intermeddling in our Elections, but now they come in droves, and carry all before them, except in one or two Counties; Few of their children in the Country learn English; they import many Books from Germany; and of the six printing houses in the Province, two are entirely German, two half German half English, and but two entirely English; They have one German News-paper, and one half German. Advertisements intended to be general are now printed in Dutch and English; the Signs in our Streets have inscriptions in both languages, and in some places only German: They begin of late to make all their Bonds nad other legal Writings in their own Language, which (though I think it ought not to be) are allowed good in our Courts, where the German Business so encreases that there is continual need of Interpreters; and I suppose in a few years they will be also necessary in the Assembly, to tell one half of our Legislators what the other half say; In short unless the stream of their importation could be turned from this to other colonies, as you very judiciously propose, they will soon so out number us, that all the advantages we have will not in My Opinion be able to preserve our language, and even our Government will become precarious." -- Source

$34 BILLION. We can buy and police a lot of fence for that amount.

And some guards can be bribed. As Luiz Gonzalez has noted, you only need a very small hole for a lot of ants to get in the house. [His recommendation is to lock up the sugar.]

Have you actually checked how much the union rate for building 6,000 miles of security fencing would be? You may be seriously underestimating the cost.

Think about the Big Dig in Boston before you make your estimate.

Someone posted that the Israelis only had to build 72 miles of fencing.
