Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

They just want to get under your skin, Jim. Like when radio callers say "I know you're going to hang up on me."

Hang up on them. Let 'em get their own website and pay for the bandwidth themselves.

Golly, Jim, the article says you have staff. That is a very plural noun.

When they are setting the Executive Luncheon table in the FR Corporate Dining room does that staff always make sure there are fresh flowers on your table? If not, I want to hear about it.

Jim Robinson said: "I also want nothing to do with vigilantism so that rules out the so-called minuteman project."

It should not have been necessary for Korean shop-keepers to stand guard over their property during the L.A. riots. But it was.

Illegal immigrants are helping themselves to services supported by our tax dollars in ever-increasing amounts. The situation has become dire enough in Kalifornia that the economic burden itself may have the beneficial effect of bankrupting the state and ending socialism as it exists today in the state. One can only hope.

Given the nonsense that passes for justice from the Ninth Circus, much of which stands unreviewed by the US Supreme Court, I don't see how anyone can rule out "vigilantism" as a final response to judicial tyranny.

We live in interesting times. Let's all hope that it doesn't become too interesting.

Dunno, Jim. Anyone who would take the time to trash FR, and you specifically, and claim to be "conservative", and use the favorite tactic of the moonbat left to make it's point, needs some serious self examination at the very least.

/seriously run-on sentence.

I don't care how much crap one throws at a wall to see if it sticks -- it's still all crap.

"Not to mention that by tolerating vigilante groups opens the site up to a significant amount of legal liability. Let the vigilantes pimp their blogs elsewhere."

Yep. They serve the purpose of making the rest of look just like the Bible-thumping, NRA membership owning, middle-aged, right-wing extremist males the left stereotypes us as. I'm not sure if it's ALL deliberate but know some of it is. The rest are useful idiots, so basically the same thing.

Living closely to the SD county of CA, I have seen the detriment that the ILLEGAL immigration has done to the state. I am outspoken about the issue and feel that FR does a lackluster job of moderating the discussion threads associated with this topic.

There are heated discussions on both sides of the issue but the thread usually becomes a smorgasbord of name-calling which originates from the Pro-Illegal immigration side. This is wrong, not moderated properly and frankly beneath my level of discussion. Therefore, I do not get into them anymore.

I agree with JR that there are sites that are more "activist" oriented that others and any site that condones any form of vigilantism should be banned and reported to the authorities.

However, If FR is going to be a meeting place for civil discourse we have to take the middle ground and realize that there will be many sides to each issue.

I enjoy the board here and will continue to engage in a wonderful myriad of discussions, unless there truly is a purge of any anti-illegal immigration posters. If this is the case so be it. I will not have my views changed simply by being banned from FR. Now that I have made my statement of position (not that anyone couldn't have figured it out by checking my past posts) I will patiently wait and see what happens. If I get banned for make my statement, then the original post was correct. If I do not, then JR's response is correct and I will see all of my fellow FReepers on the threads doing what we all like to do; Have fun, learn a little, share a little and make fun of a few Dummies (all in good fun) and ZOT! the REAL TROLLS.

Regards,

K4

Is this William Gheen anybody we should know from some other activity on the political front or is he an upstart with a grudge? Do you suppose one could find out?

Methinks the gentleman is confused... I'm utterly opposed to another round of aliens-aliens-in-free and, obviously, haven't been cancelled.

Unless this thread is a honey-pot to attract more of the soon-to-be-zotted :)

I look forward to the FRiendly discussions and discourse when the FTAA is rolled out for consideration and enactment by our elected officials who have sworn an oath to protect and defend this sovereign nation, its Constitution, and effectively, Western Civilization as we know it today.

Not to mention those who jump onto threads completely unrelated to US borders (i.e.: any thread with 'Bush' in the title) and attempt to hijack it and turn it into a borders/Bush-bashing thread. As one or two did on the day of the Iraqi election.

They are just trying to keep up with the Every Thread Must Be About Abortion crew.

I've commented on several threads that there are a lot of new posters and many of them are obviously not our friends.

And guess what? They're still here. They post transparent comments that hit Bush hard on subjects dear to conservatives. Their purpose is two-fold.

1. The say really outlandish stuff in order to make conservatives look bad. Things like "erect a wall on the southern border".

2. They're simply trying to blend into the forum for later subversion.

I've caught a couple of these people myself (along with other FReepers) and exposed them for what they were. (actually they exposed themselves). Keep an eye out for these types. It's disturbing but kind of fun to root them out.
