WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 - The House of Representatives voted on Thursday to approve a bill tightening immigration laws in the name of border security. The main provisions of the bill, which passed 261 to 161, block states from issuing standard drivers' licenses to illegal immigrants and make it easier for judges to expel asylum seekers.
Representative F. James Sensenbrenner Jr., Republican of Wisconsin and sponsor of the bill, said that the measures were necessary to fulfill recommendations of the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Noting that several of the men involved in those attacks were illegal immigrants who had American drivers' licenses, which they used as identification when boarding planes, Mr. Sensenbrenner said the bill "aims to prevent another 9/11-type attack by disrupting terrorist travel."

But Senator Trent Lott, Republican of Mississippi, said, "The president's guest worker program is not going anywhere, period." Mr. Lott added: "He needs to go ahead and accept it. We are not going to do anything that looks like, smells like or in anyway resembles amnesty, period."
Trent Lott has lousy grades on Immigration but even he says the Guest Worker Program doens't have a chance in hell - even in the Senate!
I think it's time to get the forks ready because the Guest Worker Program is almost done...
The tide has been turning for quite some time now, they just failed to recognize it.
I have a feeling that the REAL ID act will be DOA in the Senate as well.

For your discussion.
Bush (reluctantly) supported the bill, it will probably pass the Senate because of it, though you never know.
On of the few Common Sense statements about Immigration Reform I've heard out of the mouth of a Republican in some months. I hope he's got lots of company.
But Senator Trent Lott, Republican of Mississippi, said, "The president's guest worker program is not going anywhere, period."
So Trent finally grew a set? I can't believe it.
That WILL make the President and Senor Fox very unhappy.
Meanwhile back on the ranch in New Mexico a bill has passed the State Senate that would force local law enforcement not to enforce federal immigration laws.
Well, at least Trent Lott has given up bashing Rummy temporarily to say something sensible.
Personal attacks violate Jim's posting guidelines. That includes personal attacks posted in keywords.
The tide is turning people. Please help us keep up the pressure on our lawmakers who pander to illegal aliens and the open borders crowd. The more we fax our elected official, the better chance we have of stopping the next terrorist attack and destruction of our American culture.

This week Mr. Delay discussed a possible compromise between Republicans and President Bush on the guest worker program that would allow immigrants to apply from abroad with a job lined up, with a fixed return date and without the right to bring their families.
Hey you all can give your kudos to Lott, but I will trust DeLay more than Lott. Intellectually and politically.
We'll see. Congress has passed "tough immigration legislation" in the past, then put the brakes on the Border Patrol and INS the first time an illegal alien "advocacy group" or someone in Mexico whined about USBP or INS actually enforcing the "tough immigration legislation". Until I see differently, I'll assume it's just window dressing and eyewash.
I think that they're rentals. He'll return them before the fight over Supreme Court justices.
I'm curious to see how my two senators vote on this. I'd be disappointed if they voted against the House's bill.
