Ramallah: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas fired three security chiefs yesterday after militants, defying his truce with Israel, launched mortar bombs at Jewish colonies and gunmen raided a Gaza jail.
A Palestinian security official said Abdul Razeq Al Majaydeh, public security chief for the West Bank and Gaza, National Police Chief Saeb Al Ajez and Omar Ashour, commander of the security forces in the southern Gaza Strip, were dismissed.
"Abu Mazen (Abbas) was angered by the mortar fire and the jail attack," the official said, citing a "security deterioration" in the Gaza Strip.
Earlier, Hamas militants launched mortar bombs at Jewish colonies in the Gaza Strip, the first sustained firing since Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon proclaimed a truce at a summit in Egypt on Tuesday.
Hamas said it was responding to the Israeli army's killing of a Palestinian near a Gaza colony on Wednesday.
In an incident yesterday, dozens of Palestinian gunmen burst into a Gaza prison and killed three inmates in what police described as score-settling between feuding clans.
The dismissals were announced hours after Abbas ordered security forces to enforce the ceasefire.
