John Derbyshire. Nice Election, Now Let's Get Out of There.
NR Online ^ | 2/8/05 | John Derbyshire

John Derbyshire just appeared on C-SPAN with Brian. It was absolutely amazing how liberal Democrats hungering for some scrap of intellectual content to bolster their "hate Bush" rhetoric, just ate up everything he said. It shows how intellectually bankrupt they are. I can see some sensible sounding Democrats splitting off from 1/3 of the radicals in their party leaving the radicals as a 3rd party and joining with some liberal Republicans to form a new party with maybe 30-40 % of the electorate to challenge and provide some real opposition to conservative Republicans.

Did anybody else see this program and see these possibilities emerging from the questions?

But don't all people, everywhere, want to live in freedom? No, they don't.

I disagree with this statement. It is patently false and contrary to the nature of man.

The statement could be corrected and rephrased as such "Don't all people, everywhere, want to get off their duff and live in freedom?" Then, the answer is correctly, "No".

Derbyshire is conservative and a very smart fellow, a mathematician by training I believe. I saw him last on C-SPAN on a panel discussing Tom Wolfe's novel "I am Charlotte Simmons." It was a sharp panel, and he was probably the sharpest blade in the pack.

He may be smart, but it doesn't show in this article. His view is short sighted and his arguments are tired and flawed. This article smacks of lazy pandering.

I read Wolfe's book over the holidays. Derbyshire's articles on 'Charlotte' on NRO are very interesting.
He says that his scientist friends are finding hard evidence that life is, in fact, just a brief candle.
Very disheartening.

Derb is one of my favorite writers, and intellectually impressive. But I totally disagree with his stance on this subject.

Too bad that TV/radio shows don't have him on to talk about other things, like immigration and the value of assimilation, the importance of the traditional family, and other topics.

Maybe John just doesn't believe that the Creator made man with certain inalienable rights - life, LIBERTY and the pursuit of happiness; or maybe only AMERICANS and a few others possess these??
How does he get around this??
