"The sovereignty over the territorial sea is exercised subject to this convention," the document states in Article 2, thus giving the U.N. control of seas, oceans and their natural resources.
The LOST also created the International Seabed Authority (ISA) which adjudicates disputes among parties, has taxing power on members states and contractors,
But at the other end of the spectrum, the Bush administration, like others before it, is perfectly happy to allow the U.N.'s World Trade Organization to effectively dictate America's international commerce. There is speculation Mr. Bush himself opposes the treaty, but all evidence points to the contrary.

Ping Ping Ping... This treaty needs to die quickly. Senator Lugar needs to hear from all Americans... "AMERICA IS NOT FOR SALE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh man not this piece of LOSer legislation again!
And, of course, he doesn't cite any of this evidence.
Free Republic is a very informative place and much can be learned here. I appreciate your reply #1, dumb me always thought it was the Senate that ratified.
Luger is pushing for "Unanimous Consent," which means no debate, just a voice vote.
In other words, no exposure, and no accountability.
We need to push for FULL DEBATE, and recorded votes.
"We need to push for FULL DEBATE, and recorded votes."
And if Bush said NO now, it would end. Why is Luger for this anyway?
It has to get 67 senators to vote for it.
Right, just like they ratified NAFTA and GATT.
Why doesn't the President or the SoS make their case for LOST, to the conservatives who oppose it? Aren't we due that little?
Resolutions of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies, June 27, 2004
1. Resolution: Opposing the Ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty
WHEREAS the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) represents the single largest potential handover of national sovereignty to an international agency in the history of the United States; and
WHEREAS LOST would place all seas and oceans of the entire world under the permanent and irrevocable sovereign authority of the United Nations; and
WHEREAS LOST would force the United States to transfer all technology related to the detection of enemy submarines to every nation in the world; and
WHEREAS LOST would declare the entire United States effort to interdict terrorists at sea illegal; and
WHEREAS LOST would create a UN agency with the stated mission of confiscating all wealth produced by private companies at sea from shipping lines to oil drillers and handing that wealth to poorer third world countries according to an explicitly Marxist formula; and
WHEREAS LOST would empower that same UN agency to tax every human being on Earth, but particularly those in wealthy countries, chiefly the United States; and
WHEREAS the treatys additional provisions are of such astonishing reach as to violate virtually every provision of Americas Declaration of Independence; and
WHEREAS Jimmy Carter negotiated this horrible treaty, which was opposed even by his own Democratic U.S. Senate; and
WHEREAS Ronald Reagan withdrew the treaty in the 1980s, and Jesse Helms killed it again when Bill Clinton resubmitted it in the 1990s; and
WHEREAS an unholy trifecta of John Kerry, Joe Biden and Richard Lugar foisted it this Spring upon an unsuspecting new Senate Foreign Relations Committee, lying about the treatys provisions and banning every dissenting voice from testifying, fraudulently obtained a unanimous recommendation for ratification from the Committee;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the National Federation of Republican Assemblies,
1. 1. Opposes ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty;
2. 2. Condemns the dishonest, fraudulent behavior of Senators John Kerry, Joe Biden and Dick Lugar in pressing for ratification;
3. 3. Calls upon President Bush to clearly and loudly oppose and (like Ronald Reagan) de-sign this treaty (thereby removing it once and for all from Senate ratification); and
4. 4. In the event that President Bush does not immediately withdraw the treaty, calls upon the United States Senate to immediately do its duty and uphold its oath by voting once and for all to deny ratification of the UN Law of the Sea Treaty; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be sent to President Bush, and all members of the U.S. Senate.

2. Resolution: Opposing U.S. Entry into a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)
Whereas, President Bush has stated his intention to have Congress place the United States into a new 34-nation Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) after January 2005; and
Whereas, the FTAA would greatly expand and broaden the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to include all of North and South America, resulting in an exponential increase in the problems brought on by NAFTA and the World Trade Organization (WTO), including loss of sovereignty and economic independence, and the effective elimination of national borders with a resultant dramatic increase in the illegal alien invasion and loss of national security, which will in turn cause increased criminal, welfare, and culture costs to the U. S.; and
Whereas, NAFTA and WTO tribunals now claim authority to overrule our laws and court decisions and to make awards to Mexican, Canadian and European businesses, that the U. S. taxpayer must pay, illustrates that NAFTA and WTO have diminished U.S. sovereignty; and
Whereas, in late 2003, the European Unions threat to boycott American products, if the U.S. refused to bow to the WTO demand to cancel a tariff on imported steel, resulted in a President Bush cave in by canceling the U.S. steel tariff that had been installed to save a U.S. steel industry necessary for national defense; and
Whereas, a continuing surrender of U.S. sovereignty to Free Trade Treaties has nearly emasculated our U.S. Constitution and laws, significantly transferring sovereignty to Regional and UN Commissions, FTAA can be expected to drastically add to these losses; and
Whereas, the economic problems of Free Trade have been confirmed by economic data, as stated by the Christian Science Monitor, in November 2003 that Free Trade is one of the key factors behind a continuing plunge in the number of U.S. manufacturing jobs from 19.3 million in 1980 to about 14.6 million today; and
Whereas, our nation has suffered the loss of approximately 900,000 jobs, as a result of the movement of over 2000 industrial plants mostly to northern Mexico, because of the NAFTA between Canada, the USA and Mexico, and this trend can be expected to accelerate under FTAA; and
Whereas, increased commerce from these NAFTA plants has forced a wider opening of Americas southern border, and all of our national borders, ports and air terminals can be expected to be opened wider under FTAA; and
Whereas, despite NAFTA, the corrupt Mexican government has shown an inability to create the jobs and economy necessary to employ its population internally; that fact, plus the U.S. jobs moved to northern Mexico have attracted poverty stricken Mexicans to our southern border in more massive numbers than the jobs available, resulting in an invasion of huge numbers of illegal immigrants to America attributable to NAFTA; and
Whereas, our U.S. government has refused to guard our borders from this alien invasion, this invasion has resulted in severe damage to our U.S. economy, crime control, welfare costs, culture and provided cover for both Latin American, Islamic and other terrorist groups to easily enter the U.S., these problems can be expected to be even more severe with extension to open ports and air terminals under FTAA; and
Whereas, just as the creation of the European Common Market (the European version of the FTAA) inevitably led to the Euro and then the European Union (EU) with its own Parliament and eventual Constitution, resulting in the loss of each European countrys national sovereignty, so too would the FTAA inevitably lead to an American Union and the loss of U.S. Constitutional protections and national sovereignty.
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the National Federation of Republican Assemblies respectfully but firmly urges all members of Congress to vote NO on any agreement for U. S. entry into a Free Trade Area of the Americas agreement; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this Resolution be sent to all members of the U.S. Senate and the U.S.Congress.

3. Resolution: Reaffirming the Bill of Rights: Limiting the U.S. Patriot Act
WHEREAS, the people are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among which are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness, under the Laws of Nature and Natures God, as described in our Declaration of Independence and secured by our U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights; and
WHEREAS, the State of Arizona is committed to upholding the United States Constitution and its Bill of Rights, and the Arizona State Constitution and its Bill of Rights (Article II, Sections 1-34); and
WHEREAS, the State of Arizona is committed to safeguarding the freedoms of its residents; and
WHEREAS, the State of Arizona is comprised of a diverse and multi-ethnic population, and has experienced first hand the value of legal immigration to the American way of life; and
WHEREAS, During World War II United States citizens (including Arizona residents) experienced first hand the dangers of unbalanced pursuit of security without appropriate checks and balances for the protection of basic liberties; and
WHEREAS, the recent adoption of the USA Patriot Act, the Homeland Security Act, and several executive orders may unconstitutionally authorize the Federal government to infringe upon fundamental liberties in violation of due process, the right to privacy, searches and seizures, and basic First Amendment freedoms, all guaranteed by the Constitutions of Arizona and the United States
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Arizona Republican Assembly REPEATS its 2003 call upon our Congressional delegation to work to repeal any sections of the USA Patriot Act, Homeland Security, or recent executive orders that limit or violate fundamental rights of liberties protected by the Constitutions of Arizona and the United States; and
BE IT RESOLVED, that the State Legislatures monitor implementation of any legislation related or similar to the USA PATRIOT Act, Homeland Security, and the associated orders and rules of the executive branch, and actively work for the repeal of the provisions of those laws, orders and rules that
violate the civil rights and liberties guaranteed by the United States and state Constitutions; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that to the extent legally possible, the State Legislatures require that no state funds be used for unconstitutional activities, including but not limited to the following under the USA Patriot Act:
(1) Monitoring the exercise of First Amendment Rights;
(2) Obtaining library records, bookstore records, and web site activities without evidence of probable cause and the notification of those being investigated;
(3) Issuing warrants through the United States Attorney's Office without evidence of probable cause;
(4) Requesting non-consensual releases of student and faculty records from public schools and institutions of higher learning without evidence of probable cause and the notification of those being investigated; and

4. Resolution: Declaring U. S. Independence from the UN
WHEREAS, the people are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among which are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness, under the Laws of Nature and Natures God, as described in our Declaration of Independence and secured by our U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights; and
WHEREAS, the United States of America was set up by our Founders as a sovereign Union of sovereign States with a system of government created for a self-governing people; and
WHEREAS, the USA, in becoming a member of the United Nations, entered into a Treaty which now threatens to destroy our national sovereignty, self-government and our Freedom to practice the Rights secured by our U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights through continuing UN encroachments, such as
a) a) the INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT (subjecting Americans to jurisdiction of a UN court, where they are not protected by U.S. Constitution Rights); the WTO free trade agreements (subjecting our commercial laws to an alien trade committee); and the UNCED Environmental and Development Treaties (i.e., Agenda 21, Biodiversity, and Climate Change Treaties, etc., subjecting our national forests, wetlands and border areas to UN control), are examples of our growing loss of sovereignty and self-government under our U.S. Constitution, and
b) b) The INTERNATIONAL COVENANT ON CIVIL AND POLITICAL RIGHTS wherein all Rights are subject to Orwellian restriction by law (alienable) and there is no 2nd Amendment Right, is an example of the growing loss of our U.S. Constitutional Bill of Rights (unalienable) as the UN moves ever closer to a one world government; and
c) c) U.S. State Dept. Document 7277 (total disarmament in deference to a UN army) is evidence of our governments acquiescence to future UN one world government sovereignty; and
WHEREAS, a continuing chain of future UN Treaties threatening our sovereignty, self-government and U.S. Constitutional freedoms can be expected, as long we remain a member of the UN and its program for one world government (examples of such Treaties are the Kyoto Global Warming Treaty and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child Treaty, which attack both our economy and our culture); and
WHEREAS, the UN is primarily made up of socialist nations and tyrannical dictatorships whose values and cultures are opposed to our system of Constitutional self-government;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the National Federation of Republican Assemblies calls upon Congress to co-sponsor and support Rep. Ron Pauls bill, HR 1146, the American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2003, TO REMOVE THE UNITED STATES from UNITED NATIONS MEMBERSHIP; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the National Federation of Republican Assemblies Board calls upon the respective State Legislatures to pass a resolution to be sent to the U.S. Congress and to the other States, TO REMOVE THE UNITED STATES from UNITED NATIONS MEMBERSHIP; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted to our respective state delegations in the United States Congress, and the members of the State Legislatures.
LOST should definitely get lost.
