GRAND JUNCTION - The woman who admitted lying about her husband dying in Iraq could face federal charges.
Sarah Kenney told a Grand Junction radio station that her husband was serving in Iraq and that he was killed last week. She later recanted the story, after the radio station joined forced with a local group to launch a fundraiser.
Before admitting she made the whole thing up, Kenney produced a picture of a soldier she said was her husband and when pressed for more proof, she allegedly gave a false social security number.
The Denver office of Defense Criminal Investigative Services says that number was linked to a woman who died in the 1990s. Agent Steve O'Neill says misuse of a Social Security number is a federal felony.
The Mesa County district attorney is also investigating whether Kenney has broken any state or local laws.
Sarah Kenney's husband -- Michael Kenney -- is actually a manager at a local fast-food restaurant. He says he can't imagine why his wife made up the story. Sarah Kenney says she's sorry and embarrassed about what she did.
Her grandmother says she's crazy and needs to be institutionalized. From the quotes in the paper, the husband does not sound any better.
They have a two year old son, but he lives with Sarah's mom in Denver.
I agree this person has emotional problems, but she should be prosecuted. What's she gonna get?Probation, house arrest?A judge would probably order counciling as well.An example needs to be set.
