The Web site began as a sort of Internet boutique for like-minded conservatives and libertarians, suspicious of federal power and angry at President Bill Clinton.
Started in 1997 by a reclusive California conservative, freerepublic.com saw its membership blossom with Clinton's impeachment and the election of George W. Bush. Attention to the site reached a zenith last fall, when a "freeper" -- the group's moniker for its bloggers -- first discussed flaws in documents CBS News used in a report critical of Bush's National Guard service.

One participant working under the handle MD4BUSH, whose identity is unknown, drew Steffen into a private conversation and appeared to coax him to share more details about his role in spreading the rumor. Copies of those chat room e-mails were later provided to The Washington Post.
The Oct. 18 conversation began with MD4BUSH complimenting Steffen and saying how obvious it was that the rumors about the mayor were true. Steffen, writing under the name NCPAC, replied:
"I don't look for the MO'M [O'Malley] story to hit for a little bit yet. . . . However, a lot of what everyone knows about MO'M is because of work that has occurred. It's been a wild ride."
MD4BUSH later probed further:
"Your saying that my dentist knows [about the rumors] because of work you did? Wow, I must say, I'm impressed. I mean really, everyone knows -- how did that happen?"

"MD4Bush is a WaComPost plant, obviously."
Mogan David 4 Bush. Dang, I knew it was the Jews. /sarcasm off
Amazing how the MSM can't get it straight that we aren't bloggers and it isn't a chat room.
Morning to you both....FWIW, Meek, do you think you, or someone, can post a BRIEF synopsis/history of tis whole thing, so that everyone can be reasonably current..and JR, I'd suggest that something from you would be helpful, explaining/restating FR's view on "expectations of privacy" on what in posted here and who does so...
You don't really think MD4Bush has either the guts or integrity to come back and defend him/herself, do you Jim?
I have been thinking about this kind of political subterfuge for a very long time. I'm 58 years old, and have been interested in politics since Nixon/Haldeman/Ehrlichman/Coulson/Segretti.
Maybe youremember Ed Muskie breaking down during the 1972 campaign over Segretti-planted false stories in a New Hampshire newspaper that accused Mrs. Muskie of being a heavy smoker and drinker.
It is said that Segretti also forged letters on fake Muskie campaign letterhead, disrupted rallies and fundraising dinners, and spread untrue stories about the sex lives of candidates.
It is also claimed that Segretti smeared George McGovern, George Wallace, Shirley Chisholm, and McGovern's first vice presidential choice, Senator Tom Eagleton.
Segretti did not go on to a high-level White House job -- he was sentenced to six months in federal prison for distributing illegal campaign material.

Let's face it, political dirty tricks have been going on forever, from all sides.
I'm one of the people who believe it's wise and necessary to fight fire with fire, that sometimes it's needed that good people do "bad things". Unfortunate but true.
So the issues introduced in this thread are the most important in the next years. The question of our internet privacy is a huge one.
I'm technically ignorant on computers, but I hope there are those here at FR who will be successful protecting the integrity of this site.
For one, I am very glad some one FReepmailed me about this article. I don't know why he/she did mail me, but I am glad. This is quite important.
Why am I seeing images of long finger nails, the 'Spruce Goose', Jane Russell, and Howard Hughes?
:-)
It seems to be another chapter in the "culture wars." They realized this was an important factor after the Dan Rather/Buckhead episode which nearly brought down CBS. Now they are going after the conservative sites. A predictable maneuver.
I'm betting the next phase of the attack will be a push to get internet sites like FR to be bound by the "Fariness Doctrine".
That should be "FReeper"..............
Look for the WaPo to infiltrate more often. This MD4BUSH looks like a deep cover alias.
Hey! Where'd you get that hat?
Thanks.
I don't respond to such freepmails and I don't do e-mail with anyone. I may be exposing a perfectly harmless and innocent new Freeper - but given this, I'm not going to take that chance.
They didn't have to access..they had a shill..MD4Bush..He posted the private mail on 2/8 to 3 totally unrelated threads..Do a search on his poster name and look at his posts..his last previous post was in Dec. He posted on those old threads so when a search was done on his name..he had it there. It was a parting gloat...!
The anonymous internet is a great place to do stealth dirty tricks...and MD seemed awfully interested in dirty tricks...The Sun's own message boards had the rumors out there but now it is made to appear the rumor started here..
Seems they don't like a "Kennedy" getting beaten by a Republican in Maryland. This is all to get back at the Governor.
This story gets a Black Aggie Urban Legend award
for helping to spread the idea that FR was the origin of the rumor in question.
It's obvious, if you check MD4BUSH's posting history recently, that when he posted private freepmails, it was with malicious intent.
Of course, we DON'T KNOW if those freepmails have been altered, DO WE????
Yes, very predictable!
But I'm hoping in their zest to go after conservative sites they come off looking like the insane pretender, Ward Churchill, the looney America hating "professor". But their efforts to go after the conservative sites are obviously going to have to be exposed, or all will be lost.
If you come across any more threads on this subject over the next months, please feel free to ping me!

By the way, after seeing and hearing about this loon Ward Churchill in Colorado, I'll never be able to hear the name Ward Cleaver in the same way ever again.
;-)
Thanks for that explanation. It means MD4 was either a Washington Post infiltrator, or just a traitor. You're right that the MSM target is Governor Ehrlich, who is a darn good governor.
