Lets hope we can at least get this made into law.

The bill makes compliance voluntary but if a state does not comply, the licenses it issues could not be used as valid identification to board airplanes in the United States, open bank accounts or enter federal buildings.
So, I'll use my passport for those things. This is a backhanded, dishonest method to make the states generate National ID cards. The Feds should have the guts to create one themselves if that is what they want.

If they can keep the states from issuing licenses to illegal immigrants, there will be no need for a national ID card. These people broke the law coming here illegally, they should not be rewarded with drivers licenses and all of the other benefits they get. The illegal immigrants are bankrupting many states and eventually they will bring down this country.
A nation can never be truly safe if its borders are not secure!

It would be a step in the right direction.
Next stop all benefits they are now receiving.

Take away the benefits, and send them back to their country of origin.
If someone comes here legally and follows the proper channels, I say more power to them. But, these people broke the law. They have no right to be here.

"Basically, it would impose this rigid, prescriptive, unworkable framework for dealing with these issues on the states," said Cheye Calvo, senior policy analyst for the bipartisan National Conference of State Legislatures, which opposes the bill. "What it's asking states to do is simply impossible." So asking for proof of citizenship (like a birth certificate) or else changing the license's expiration date to match a legal visa's exit date is unworkable or impossible? It doesn't seem all that hard.

Whether or not an individual gets a state drivers license should be up to the state. If the Feds do not wish to rely on licenses for ID, then let them create a National ID. But they won't cause they're chicken. So instead they intrude on yet more state turf.

"So asking for proof of citizenship (like a birth certificate) or else changing the license's expiration date to match a legal visa's exit date is unworkable or impossible? It doesn't seem all that hard."I had to show my birth certificate to get my license for the first time. So how hard is it. If it is a Visa, look at the date it expires and type it in to the expiration field for the license. They make it sound like we are asking them to perform quantum physics.

Huh, back in December Sensenbrenner was the scorned woman on FR and President Bush the insensitive brute since this same bill was deleted from the Homeland Security bill.
Your alls pictures should be next to and the epitomie of the adage "damned if you do, damned if you don't", IMO.

The governor [Schwarzenegger]
has said he will not support legislation unless he is assured that it will not make it easier for would-be terrorists to obtain licenses as a step toward gaining legitimacy in the United States. Our wonderful RINO governor at work, protecting our interests by ensuring that only non-terrorist illegal aliens are issued driver's licenses---wonder how that works.

Maybe you should read the bill. It does NOT force the states to alter their rules for drivers licenses. The bill sets standards for federal acceptance of ID's. The states can give licenses to anyone it wants, but if those licenses do not meet federal standards they cannot be used to board planes (which travel across state and international lines) or federal buildings, etc.
How anyone can debate that immigration laws are NOT part of homeland security just baffles me. And after all, as far as I am concerned, the ONLY real powers given to the federal government is defense.

"Whether or not an individual gets a state drivers license should be up to the state."I would leave it up to the states, but they continue to cater to these law breakers. They are here illegally, they should be rounded up and shipped home. The border needs to be secured so they cannot return illegally again.

I certainly didn't complain back in December.

In a speech on the House floor, Rep. Henry A. Waxman (news, bio, voting record) (D-Los Angeles) said provisions dealing with the federal government's ability to override local laws to complete sections of border fence would waive environmental and child labor laws, among others. So, Bush is going to use child labor to reapir fences? I always thought something was not right with him.(/sarcasm)

Would this mean we would see a first veto from the President?

I certainly didn't complain back in December Excuse me, maybe not you individually, but a lot on FR were, now that same bill is going to pass the House and the President is backing it, and now all I see are complaints.

"Would this mean we would see a first veto from the President?"I hope not. I think if the President checks the feelings of a lot of his supporters, he will see that most are opposed to his "guest worker" idea. I understand he wanted to use it as a way of finding out who is here, but again it is rewarding law breakers.

What is your take in the subject?
To: Jersey Republican Biker Chick
I am neutral on this bill except for the draconian driver license provisions especially the mandate that states must join the #@^#en Driver License Agreement (DLA) as defined in section 203. As I said before, this DLA would make any information including SS#'s available not only between states but Canada and Mexico - NAFTA National ID. It is not right !
This is a prime example of Federal micromanagement. If the Federal Gov't wants a national ID, why can't they issue it themselves instead of abusing the states to do their dirty work for them. I am a far right winger myself but the GOP has strayed from what use to be the party of small gov't and pro states rights especially under President Reagan. It seems like it is becoming the party of Country Club and Corporate Executive Elite who don't gives a rats @$$ about individual freedom.
