One phone call helped a local Cub Scout set a new national record for selling popcorn.
Ryan Cenk, 10, of Richland, sold $25,006 worth of Trail's End popcorn last year in the Boy Scouts' annual money-raising drive. The previous national record was $20,000; the previous Pittsburgh-area record was $5,000.
The Greater Pittsburgh Council of the Boy Scouts of America honored Ryan and other top sellers at its board meeting on Tuesday.

Boy Scout Popcorn Ping
And we have boxes of it here at work in the kitchen to snack on.
A co worker has a kid in Scouts, we trade donation stuff so each of our kids do well, so I have a few boxes under my desk as well.
Wow! My Cub Scout pack, Pack 518 in Michigan could have held the record. We sold just under $21,000 this year. We must be in second place nationally.
We 're having our annual banquet tomorrow night, so I'll be sure to mention this.
I guess I should read the article more closely. This was sales by one Cub Scout! Even without the $13.5K order, this kid sold $12,000 worht of popcorn.
Might as well just award this kid his Eagle Award now.
I think the record mentioned is for a single scout. I'm sure he wasn't the only member of his pack to sell popcorn. But! $21,000 for your whole pack is nothing to sneeze at either!
Ummm, can my sons take your work order next year??
Nope, we're not complaining. We got a surprise bonus from the Scout Council. Within ten minutes of getting the check, we ordered a new 4 lane aluminum Pinewood Derby track.
We had our races last week and are going to have all the Scouts sign "their" track at our banquet tomorrow night.
I'm surprised some liberal grinch hasn't tried to sue him for something....
We didn't do great with the popcorn sales but my 7 yr old Tiger Scout just won first place in his division for the Scouts Pinewood Derby. </proud mom off>
Hey, us too! First place for my 2nd year WEBELOS. My husband's not handy so Mom has always helped them make their derby cars. 2 sons and 7 years of cub scouting later we finally won a trophy in our final year of the derby. It was soooo exciting!
Trail's End always.
Well, we stunk at ours. My Cub won a heat but didn't place intot he finals at all. My car looked pretty cool, but lost bad in the leaders category. We also made one for my pre-Tiger. His did well, but it was only for bragging rights.

There's lots of good speed tips at this site. Smoothing and polishing the axles and using graphite lubricant is a must!
Our first 5 years we didn't do well at all. Last year I think we came in around 4th or 5th and this year we finally got it right. (mostly by luck, I think)
I tricked out the wheels (legally), polished the axles, lubed and everything. My car was 5.000 oz. My kid's was 4.9850.
He actually won one heat, but what killed him was that one of the starting guys put his car on backwards for the first heat. The weight distributon affected his score. (I was the other starter, so I'll take some blame)
It wasn't that his was bad, but a few other cars were just too good. A couple of the kids have hit upon a design/weight combo that renders them unbeatable. The one kid won districts last year.
