A blogger brought to my attention an Op Ex article by Bill Moyers that appeared in the Jan. 30 Star Tribune entitled, "There is no tomorrow."
The third paragraph reads as follows:
"Remember James Watt, President Ronald Reagan's first secretary of the interior? My favorite online environmental journal, the ever-engaging Grist, reminded us recently of how James Watt told the U.S. Congress that protecting natural resources was unimportant in light of the imminent return of Jesus Christ. In public testimony he said, 'after the last tree is felled, Christ will come back.' "
I have never thought, believed or said such words. Nor have I ever said anything that could be interpreted by a reasonable person to mean anything similar to the quote attributed to me.
The paragraph does have one true statement about me; I did serve as President Reagan's first secretary of the interior. I am very proud of being associated with such a great president. After 20-plus years of hindsight, I am delighted that the revolution I helped to bring about remains fixed in America.

In quoting James Watt, Bill Moyers cited an article in Grist magazine. On Feb. 4, Grist published the following correction:
"In fact, Watt did not make such a statement to Congress. The quotation is attributed to Watt in the book 'Setting the Captives Free' by Austin Miles, but Miles does not write that it was made before Congress. Grist regrets this reporting error and is aggressively looking into the accuracy of this quotation."
The Star Tribune also regrets the error, and will report any further developments in the Grist inquiry.
Your taxes and mine paid Moyers' salary for decades.
I just noticed that clicking the link takes you to a registration page, which is strange since I found this article without being registered at the Star-Tribune. Maybe this should be pulled.
Leave it. Those who do not wish to register can simply delcine.
Partially due to clicking links via Free Repbulic, I'm registered with dozens and dozens of online media sites, including the Star-Tribune. I suspect others are too.
Disgusting is all I have to say about bill moyers. A leftist, pacifist, and a whole lot of other ists thrown in, but an American, NEVER.
They have no ideas for the future and no truth to support their policies of the past.
Read the "correction" above carefully; they STILL do not admit that Moyer made the whole thing up. They are just saying the "statement" was not made before Congress. Creeps.
Keep in mind that Moyers hitchiked himself into Washington as LBJs press flack. He has never had a close relationship with honesty of accuracy.
Pingomai, and THANK GOD for alternative media.
"Your taxes and mine paid Moyers' salary for decades."
He still sucking. Moyers has marketing residuals from sale of his PBS tripe. The bright side is that if you invest in liquor distilleries, you'll get back a substantial portion of his income.
Sweet to see payback from one of the good guys, one of the earlier victoms of the MSM.
Again I say, thank God for alternative media. Otherwise, this never would have happened.
Dan
Beautiful poke in the ribs, here. Moyers is a "Reverend" (PCUSA?), iirc.
Back in the day when the dinosaurs MSM ruled the earth, they put about a story to the effect that James Watt didn't know who the Beach Boys were. Anybody remember that one?
