I would argue that we stopped others from taking over the world.. and declined the opportunity to take advantage of circumstances, and take it for ourselves..
Given that the EU (and others) are repeating the same mistakes they made before, we may not be so generous this next time.. and I wouldn't blame Americans for saying "enough, already", and demanding we set things right before leaving..
I wouldn't object to "occupation and democratization" procedures taking place for a few decades..
