Bush budget scraps 9,790 border patrol agents
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 2/9/2004 | Michael Hedges

Washington - The law signed by President Bush less than two months ago to add thousands of border patrol agents along the U.S.-Mexico border has crashed into the reality of Bush's austere federal budget proposal, officials said Tuesday.

Officialy approved by Bush on Dec. 17 after extensive bickering in Congress, the National Intelligence Reform Act included the requirement to add 10,000 border patrol agents in the five years beginning with 2006. Roughly 80 percent of the agents were to patrol the southern U.S. border from Texas to California, along which thousands of people cross into the United States illegally each year.

But Bush's proposed 2006 budget, revealed Monday, funds only 210 new border agents.

The shrunken increase reflects the lack of money for an army of border guards and the capacity to train them, officials said.

The law signed by Bush had a caveat that went virtually unreported at the time. A summary, published by the Senate Government Affairs Committee, required the government to increase the number of border agents by at least 2,00 per year, "subject to available appropiations."

Democrats were unhappy that the proposed budget used the escape clause so soon after the president approved the huge boost in border agents.

Some Republicans were also displeased.

"This is an area of homeland security that needs to be ramped up in order to increase surveillance and patrols of our nation's vast and often remote borders," said Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, chair of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.

Explain why a genuine state sponsored trained terrorist would risk being turned in for the reward or killed by coyotes, dying in the desert, or being one of the 35% caught, to get across the border into some remote town, when he could fly first class directly to his destination.

Because we're looking for them there. Read Sun Tzu - go where the enemy isn't.

If your agenda is to prevent Mexican laborers from coming to America why don't you try to make a case for that instead of pretending that your objective is to prevent terrorists?

My agenda is to stop people from entering the country illegally. If you want to work here, that's fine. Do it legally! Hell, my great-grandparents on both sides were immigrants to this country, but they came here legally. I'm not anti-immigration or anti-immigrant. I simply believe that laws should be obeyed, and that any country has the right to enforce its borders. I frankly don't give a damn why they're coming here, for jobs, for better opportunities, for my grandma's cookies... I don't care.

What's your border agenda?

Simple Math: 210 is greater than 200.

That was a white supremists site you linked to. Just as I suspected and mentioned in my post #52.

You are correct, and it's my error. I googled something along the lines of "how many illegal aliens in US 2004" and it was one of the first hits.

However, the article quoted there is from Time Magazine. Here's another link to the same article from a reputable source: Time Magazine Online, from AM640 radio's site

"100 million for the Polish army, squat for Americans on the border."

Executiver branch can decide to give that money to Poland however it cannot appropriate money to protect our own border. Don't like it, change the law.

Seems to me we are better off fighting them OVERSEAS, rather than here.

Why have they not attacked us from MEXICO?

They have had plenty of time to do it.

We must have been doing something right.

I googled the phrase "how many illegal aliens US 2004." One of the first hits was the Southern Party of Georgia, quoting a Time Magazine article. The clip was from the Time Magazine article, which was to be posted on the Southern Party of Georgia website. I didn't go all the way back to the homepage to check it before I posted.

Moderator, if you think it prudent, please remove my post #52 in this thread.

But the Mexicans are putting ten of millions of us out of work because they are cleaning our tables in restaurants, picking up the fruit and vegetables, cleaning the floors and the bathrooms in the malls, emptying the garbage cans in the place of work.

Don't you know that at least 40 millions Americans are so eager to work these jobs but those d**** Mexicans are taking it?

Don't you know that President Bush has a secret plan to give California, Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico to Mexico? Don't you know that he wants to Mexicanize America.

End of sarcasm.

Absolutely, which is why I support the global war on terror.

Why have they not attacked us from MEXICO?

I don't know. In their shoes, I sure as hell would have by now.

Is there also a lack of money for an army of able-bodied welfare spongers?

Yep. Looks like that prescription drug benefit could whack the budget to the tune of $1.2 TRILLION. Isn't it great to have taxpayers buying medications for old people? Some dork suggested capping FICA at $177,000 today. That is his "fix" to provide old people with a taxpayer funded retirement under the guise of "social security". Socialism on the march. I've paid max FICA every year since 1985. I don't expect to see a dime when I retire in 2022.

My only good news today is that Bush's tax cuts eliminated most of my consumer debt last year. This year, the refund provided me enough to buy another house. I would be thrilled to have 3 more years like the last 2.

I have used this argument numerous times and the reason it is rejected is that it is logical to begin with, and provides a laboratory to perfect and hone the skills a soldier needs to be an effective deterrent force. By normal rotation of troops on and off the borders north and south we get a much better use of our tax revenues. Ft. Hood for example is a superior marshalling center to supply all the needed numbers to achieve this vital training and preparation. As usual the chances of this happening are like the proverbial "SNOWBALL"! If it is not "OFF THE WALL" nobody will give it a second look!

That's what Bush's guest worker program is all about.

LOL... good one.

I like your user name "agincourt1415" because first it is another battle that the French had lost among the other hundred of battles they lost through out their history, and second because the English were very creative in the battle by using the long bow to defeat the French who greatly outnumbered them.

The BP catches less than 5% of the people entering, so any statement about checking for terrorists is empty and nothing more than an attempt to get you to look the other way. Bush is friendly to illegals and doesn't want Americans to think immivaders are a problem.

" We have caught millions jumping the border (1 out of 3), "

yer kidding, right? I mean, we have BP agents on FR who have stated otherwise, we have people in the field who state otherwise, and even the BP has stated otherwise.
