NEW YORK, (AP) --
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Wednesday it will close a Canadian store whose workers are on the verge of becoming the first ever to win a union contract from the world's biggest retailer.
Wal-Mart said it was shuttering the store in Jonquiere, Quebec, in response to unreasonable demands from union negotiators, that would make it impossible for the store to sustain its business. The United Food and Commercial Workers of Canada last week asked Quebec labor officials to appoint a mediator, saying that negotiations had reached an impasse.
"We were hoping it wouldn't come to this," said Andrew Pelletier, a spokesman for Wal-Mart Canada. "Despite nine days of meetings over three months, we've been unable to reach an agreement with the union that in our view will allow the store to operate efficiently and profitably."
Pelletier said the store will close in May. The retailer had first discussed closing the Jonquiere store last October, saying that the store was losing money.
The store in Jonquiere, about 100 miles north of Quebec City, became the first unionized Wal-Mart store in North America last September, after the bargaining unit was certified by provincial labor officials.

Parasitic unions do not learn. If the workers want to unionize, the company can say we close our doors. One unionized store is the bad apple Wal-Mart doesn't need.
Whats the matter do we have a little Walmart stock that we are worried about?
BTW: Although opposed to unions, I hold the "Air Teamsters" at ABX in higher regard than the trucking locals. What's it like on the automotive side.
Wal-Mart & Unions
I'm no fan of either.
Ooh. I love this.
GOOD!!!
I'd close any business that I owned rather than unionnize too. I believe in paying someone precisely what they are worth to me. No more, no less, and no one else is going to dictate that to me.
I happen to like Wal-Mart... I live in a small tourist based town, where if you wanted anything other than rubber tomahawks, pseudo-art, booze and basic groceries, you had to drive 75 miles or more to get it. Wal-Mart came in and made life simpler and less expensive for me.
That said, I DO wish Wal-Mart would go back to the "Buy American First" as they were in Sam Walton's day..... I wouldn't mind paying a little more for more American made products.....(Assuming there ARE any american made consumer products anymore)
Automotive=locomotive. But you knew that didn't you. ;-)
Okay, but I'll need to pay my due first to the guy who lives in a house you payed for.
send in the North American FreeTrade agrement Wal~Mart truckers and remove their merchandise, take the sign off the wall and leave the building standing as a symbol of defiance
I wouldn't want any of you smucks in my Union anyways.
"Is Atlas Shrugging?"
Precicely! 8^>
The unions put us out of business. First they failed to enforce their own contracts with general contractors who then hired non-union subs at will (and the non unions were of course always cheaper). Then they just kept squeezing and squeezing. Our employees wanted to be non-union because we would be able to pay them at least the same, they could invest their own money-with no vesting, provide health insurance and other benefits for less than the union cost. But no, the union wanted to make an example of us. We lost a business we had for 36 years. And most of the employees went to non union companies.
Unions are destroying America.
Really, sometimes I think the only "conservative" part of some people is the contents of their wallets.
D I T T O !!!!!
What's a smuck? Someone who makes jelly??
The major Railroads are all Union and all are prospering. I can speak only for my industry. I am sure there are abuses on both sides of the issue. Our collective bargaining process has made a lot of sacrifices since I hired out. You have not seen many rail strikes for a reason. We worked to our mutual benefit. Unions that kill the employer get their due I guess.
