'Team America' unsettles Team Kim in Pyongyang

The caricature of North Korea's "Dear Leader", Kim Jong-Il, in the film, "Team America: World Police," is striking a discordant note among North Korean officials, and probably their supreme leader himself, despite his well-known love for private viewings of foreign movies.

North Korean leader Kim Jung Il in Paramount's "Team America: World Police - 2004."

Word from Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is that the North Korean embassy there is asking the government to ban the film, the creation of Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park fame.

The Czech Foreign Ministry, however, said the North Koreans had been rebuffed in their effort to undermine the Czech Republic's post-Communist era freedom. The film shows marionettes attempting to stop Kim Jong-Il from destroying cities around the globe.

A Czech newspaper, Lidove Noviny, reports that a North Korean diplomat complained that the film "harms the image of our country." He was even quoted as saying, "Such behavior is not part of our country's political culture."

"harms the image of our country."

This is even POSSIBLE???

"Such behavior is not part of our country's political culture."

ROFL! (End of statement on NK's "political culture")

Matt Stone is (I kid you not) a nephew of pervert fossil wackjob Oliver Stone. This younger generation has no respect for its elders!

In the Czech Republic? lol.... did they really think THAT would work? Kim really is out of touch w/ reality. I expect this will make him feel even more 'ronery'.

North Korea's Kim Jong Il in 'Team America'

North Korea wants Czech ban of 'Team America'

Associated Press

PRAGUE, Czech Republic — North Korea's embassy in Prague has demanded that the film "Team America: World Police" be banned in the Czech Republic, saying the movie harms their country's reputation, a report said Saturday.

In the film by "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, a team of marionettes rushes to keep North Korean leader Kim Jong Il from destroying the world, reducing world capitals to rubble along the way.

"It harms the image of our country," the Lidove Noviny daily quoted a North Korean diplomat as saying. "Such behavior is not part of our country's political culture. Therefore, we want the film to be banned."

The Czech Foreign Ministy said the film would not be banned in the Czech Republic.

"We told them it's an unrealistic wish," ministry spokesman Vit Kolar was quoted as saying. "Obviously, it's absurd to demand that in a democratic country."

North Korea calls for ban on 'Team America' in Czech Republic

Last Updated Mon, 07 Feb 2005 14:25:55 EST

PRAGUE - The North Korean embassy in Prague is calling for a ban on Team America: World Police in the Czech Republic.

"It harms the image of our country," a daily newspaper, Lidove Noviny, quoted an official at the embassy saying about the movie that stars a team of puppet terrorist-fighters.

The comedy, which was released in October in North America, was made by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the duo behind television's South Park.

Done in the style of the Thunderbirds marionette series, the movie features an elite, albeit careless, U.S. counter-terrorism squad that destroys several world landmarks.

The main villain in Team America is North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, who is shown in the movie shooting his translator in the head and feeding former United Nations weapons inspector Hans Blix to a tank of sharks.

Aided by vacuous Hollywood stars, Jong-il plans to carry out an attack with weapons of mass destruction that will result in damage that is "9/11 times 2,356."

"Such behavior is not part of our country's political culture," the North Korean diplomat added. "Therefore, we want the film to be banned."

However, the Czech Foreign Ministry said people would continue to be allowed to see the film, which had its Czech premiere on Feb. 3.

"We told them it's an unrealistic wish," ministry spokesman Vit Kolar said. "Obviously, it's absurd to demand that in a democratic country."

The film was attacked by critics on both the right and left when it debuted in North America.

Parker and Stone said at the time that they were not taking sides in the debate over U.S. foreign policy, but just continuing their tradition of being equal-opportunity offenders.

"When this movie is over, a lot of people will be confused about what side we're on," Parker said in one interview. "That's OK, because we're confused, too."
