Mark Dayton Not Running For Re-election
Minneapolis Star Tribune (aka The Red Star) ^

Posted on 02/09/2005 9:59:41 AM PST by MplsSteve

Wow, if this is true Minnesota is gonna be a huge free for all in '06.

Everybody and their brother will run for this seat.

The DFL still has a large reservoir of talent even though the GOP has pulled to almost parity in recent elections.

Opinions anyone?

True, MN is moving in our direction, and alienating Conservative Democrats is what gave the GOP the South in the 90's up to today.

We elected Coleman and Pawlenty in 2002.

Bush could've carried MN in 2004. It was Iraq that was the killer... still an anti-war state.

I think the Dems should run Mondale again. He represents the promise of the Dem party future.

Think about it. Mondale is Guinness Book of Records loser. The only person who, as a major party candidate, lost an election in all 50 states.

Lost 49 states in the 1984 Presidential election, but won Minnesota. Seeing that his losing was not complete, he came back to lose in Minnesota in 2002 and lose the perfect 50.

If I recall, Al Franken wants to run for the senate in Minn., oh, please do Al.

If the DFL had such talent why did they run a carter era retread like Mondull? Duh. They had two weeks. You can have all the talent in the world, if you have no name ID, your screwed.

That's what I was thinking. Dayton was weaker then an open seat.

Oh well. It's still a tossup, although I'd say it's slightly leaning D.

I bet Franken runs. Please Please Please! We'll remind citizens of his temper tantrums (shown here blowing a gasket at Laura Ingraham's producer at the Republican Convention).

My feeling is that Hatch is planning a run for Governor against Tim Pawlenty.

Hatch's whole adult life has been predicated on running for Governor. He's failed twice before (in '90 and '94) and he likely views this as his last legit chance.

Yes, you are correct.

Durenberger and Boschwitz were both elected in 1978 in the "Minnesota Massacre".

They served together 'til 1990 when Boschwitz f**ked it up and lost to Wellstone.

Wasn't Dayton also the jerk who made the remarks at the Condi Rice hearings that she lied and lied and lied, blah blah, blah....

You are correct. I could see Collin Peterson running for Senate and current state senator Dean Johnson running for Peterson's House seat.

I have a suggestion for screening candidates: Tough-guy Al Franken vs. Jesse Ventura in no-holds-barred, 2 falls out 3 rassling match. I'd give Ventura 6 years in the U. S. Senate without a Republican challenge just to see him put a serious hurt on Franken. Any legislative body with Kerry, Kennedy, Boxer, Murray, Cantwell, etc. could survive one more clown like Jesse.

Just announced, so I'm sure we may see a lot of 'Rats jump in (whether they stay in or coalesce behind one candidate is another story).

I agree with Steve. It seems more likely Hatch will try for Governor, but then, you never know. I don't think the 'Rats have an 800-lb gorilla in the race, and the bloodier the primary, the better it is for us... Now if only we could keep Gutknecht in his seat and have Kiffmeyer run for Kennedy's seat.

Dayton is an extremely wealthy man whose father runs Dayton-Hudson stores, which includes Macys, Target, and other chains. Why should he stay around for anything that doesn't suit his royal highness?

Maybe the DNC has other plans for him at a national level.
