HARRISON -- A robber may have taken advantage of an elderly Clare County couple, but one of the victims wasn't about to just sit back and let it happen.

The robber showed up at the victims' house about 7 p.m. Friday asking to use their phone, said Sheriff's Detective Lt. Mark McClellan. The victims, who are in their 60s, allowed the man to use their cordless phone outside.

The culprit then asked to use the couple's bathroom, McClellan said. While in the bathroom, deputies said, the man took the couple's prescription medication out of a medicine cabinet.

The same man returned to the victims' home on West Rock about 12:40 p.m. Saturday, again asking to use the phone, McClellan said. When the couple refused, the robber shoved them back into the house and went in.

While the intruder searched the victims' bathroom and bedroom, the male resident got his pistol and ordered the man to leave, the lieutenant said. A scuffle ensued and the robber ran off, but not before the homeowner fired a shot at him.

A neighbor who heard the commotion followed the culprit into Clare but lost him in traffic, McClellan said.

Police were looking for a clean-shaven white man who stands about 6 feet tall and has a heavy build. He has dark eyes and dark hair that reached the bottom of his ears, officers said. Police believe the culprit is 25 to 30. He wore a black jacket and blue jeans.

Police also were looking for a white woman with blond hair who accompanied the robber, officers said.

The pair fled in a full-size black Dodge four-wheel-drive pickup with a regular cab, police said. The truck has damage on the passenger side of the bed, 4x4 decals on the sides and some type of writing on the tailgate.

Anyone with information should call Clare County deputies at (989) 539-7166.v

Well, I'm glad the old guy got off a shot, but his aim is as off as his judgement. In this case, if the facts are all there, he opened himself up and advertised himself as a victim for the crime. First he gives the perp the phone and then he lets him to use the bathroom. No wonder they returned the next day to continue using grandpa. Sheesh. Grandpa and Grandma should be glad they aren't dead.

If he really used the telephone, is there some way to track down who he called?

What if the pharmacist was old.

Back in those days, the pharmacy kept regular hours & robbers hit it in the wee hours. One incident I recall, the Bad Guys cut a hole in the roof & went in thataway. In fact, the drugstore got knocked over so often that a number of the townfolk theorized that the robberies were inside jobs planned by the owner.

We have a similiar problem on the Delaware, Pennsylvania border. Home invasions at night and the victims are older folks. Kicking in the door, breaking slider glass and scaring the people while taking cash and jewelry. Nobody has been hurt yet but it is only a matter of time. The PA State Police told folks to leave the outside lights on at night. The state police cannot cover all the territory. No home owner pulled out a gun yet although on 90 year old man hit the guy with a baseball bat. The 90 year old lost his balance but managed to tag the burgler a couple of times.

"Lost them in traffic?"

Maybe the neighbor was elderly also, drove only 35 mph and had his left turn signal on the whole time.

And we walked uphill six miles in waist deep snow to the pharmacy to rob it! And uphill six miles back in broiling 120 °F heat! And we liked it!

Here is one Grandpa and Grandma I wouldn't advise the punks to come around their house. They just might find out how good a shot my wife and I are... since we each own Colt Python 357 Magnums.
