"Deep Throat's" Identity May be Revealed Soon.

On first segment of GMA, Charlie Gibson reported that Bob Woodward told his former WaPost editors that Deep Throat is seriously ill.

This is important because "Woodstein" have always promised to reveal the identity of Deep Throat on his death.

Various rumors have circulated about the real name of the man who brought down the Nixon administration. Fred Fielding, Al Haig, L. Patrick Gray, even a young G.H.W.B. have all been mentioned, along with dozens of others.

There was even some specualtion that Deep Throat might have been former DOJ offical William Renquist.... and we all know he is ill.

The only other public persona known to be ill is the Pope.... and I think we can rule him out.,,, but of course someone else from that era might be ill without the public knowing about it.

So, will we soon know the identity of Deep Throat?

Gee, just a couple of weeks ago, the "HOT" line on this old story was: "George H. W. Bush was deep-throat." I guess this new rumor knocks him out of the story.

However, Ford did not become VP until December 1973, well into the Watergate investigation. Before that he was House Minority Leader and unlikely to have the kind of insider info the WaPo wanted. So I think that eliminates him.

Agnew was VP until Oct 1973. Ford replaced him when Agnew resigned. Prior to that Ford was Minority Leader in the House.

Dan Rather. Now that would be a riot. And he certainly fits the description of being sick. This would have come after he and Cronkite put on spacesuits and pretended to be walking on the moon.

My vote as well. Also, I think reporting and not citing sources is bad journalism. For example, Dan Rather can invent a source that says George Bush didn't show up for his TANG drills. Someone challenges this assertion, then Dan Rather says he was deceived by his source, but won't reveal who it is in the long standing tradition of Journalism. There was no "Deep Throat" and there was no TANG source. These sources were invented so their authors could say anything they wanted. the fact that Woodward's stories turned out true still does no excuse using unnamed sources. If using unnamed sources is a long standing tenet of Journalism, journalism is sick.
