Marshalltown police recovered a Chinese assault rifle from an undocumented immigrant Thursday.
According to Marshalltown Police Chief Lon Walker, a Hispanic male went to the police department to speak with officers regarding an unrelated matter. During his conversation with officers, when he was asked for his name and identification, he told police he was using a false name, and was in the country illegally.
After showing officers his fake identification, Jorge Garcia-Ortega, 26, was arrested and charged with forgery.
Before being taken to Marshall County Jail, Garcia-Ortega told officers he owned an assault rifle and offered to give it to them. Officers searched his residence at 313 N. Third St. and found an SKS assault rifle under his pillow along with two loaded 30-round magazines.
"We are pleased to get this rifle off the streets," Walker said.
Police are testing the semi-automatic rifle to see if it has been used in any crimes and to find out where it came from, Walker said.
Forgery is a class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and fines of up to $7,500. As an illegal immigrant, Garcia-Ortega also faces deportation to his country of origin.
Bet he bought it off Kerry when that flap hit.
Undocumented immigrant? Call it like it is..illegal scum.
An SKS is not an assault rifle, not even close.
Never mind the rifle, I'm glad to have the criminal scum off the street.
SO9
Oooo... An illegal immigrant keeping and bearing arms. Where will it all end?
So, did they ever find out what he originally came to discuss? He probably forgot he put the SKS under his pillow and was about to report it stolen or something.
English comprehension problem: "Under his pillow" isn't "on the streets."
I am surprised to hear that the local police bothered with an immigration bust, though, I keep hearing that that isn't a high priority for a lot of local law enforcement around the country...
Not much of a criminal though. Just doesn't seem to know when a lie is needed.
Imagine him as a confidence man:
he's just collecting the arms Americans are not willing to
collect...
Don't you have a heart? He's just here to do work Americans won't do.(sarcasm off)
One down, a couple hundred to go. The last decade has been unkind to M-town.
Man! With a guy that forthcoming and cooperative I wonder what he was really hiding! :-)
The question is where is he going to be imprisoned?
American jails are like five-star hotels compared to jails in other countries.
I would assume he had a question about voting ... never mind, you don't need I.D. to do that.
There's no such thing as a semi-auto assault rifle.
Not so brazen, really. I'm sure he expected absolutely no consequences, as there usually aren't any.
