I just heard Arnold interviewed on KMJ radio, and he stated that after a meeting this morning, he will *most likely* announce Shelly's replacement.
Also discussed the budget, where he said, sadly the Democrats do not look like they are going to cooperate so he will take his agenda to the people.
--No more tenure for teachers;
--Merit based pay for teachers, dismissal for those not performing;
--Dems want to spend 10B more than the 5B revenues taken in, and Arnold refuses to do that and keep his promise that CA will not spend more than they take in.
TOPICS: Business/Economy; Crime/Corruption; Culture/Society; Front Page News; Government; Politics/Elections; US: California
KEYWORDS: arnold; budget; endoftenure; falseads; kevinshelly; nea; redistricting; schmellygate; schwarzenegger; shmelleygate; teachers; tenure; unionlies

Shelley's resignation is effective March 1. He thus has plenty of time to testify before leaving office in shame.

Good. Its already February and our Do Nothing Legislature refuses to clean house in Sacramento. The people will happily do it for them.

Yes, there will be a Republican. I hope he's one who can keep the office for our party in 2006.

What about Bill Jones? He won a couple of SoS elections, didn't he? He'd certainly have the experience.

He's termed out and ineligible. And in any case, his disastrous performance in the U.S Senate race last year doesn't exactly make him a contender in statewide politics in the future here.

I don't know for sure. Bill Jones name was mentioned, but Arnold said, Bill was termed out, and legally could not appoint him to the position. But said he thinks Bill Jones was the Best SOS this state and country ever had. Also, Chuck Poochigians name came up, but Arnold said, there are a number of names on the table, and would be discussed today at this 10a.m. meeting. Then, pressed for when the announcement would come, he said, probably today!!

I'd guess Jones is not interested in public office, after seeing his lackluster performance in running for Boxer's seat.

Oh. Well, I'd be leery of appointing someone out of the legislature who might open the GOP to losing that seat.

Oh. Well, I'd be leery of appointing someone out of the legislature who might open the GOP to losing that seat. Because of the gerrymandered districts made in 2000, every Republican seat is safe.

I didn't think any Republican seat was "safe" in CA. :^)
How about Fresno's fine Mayor Alan Autry?

ALL states should get rid of Teacher Tenure. It
is the most abused rule of the AFT. It secures
people who should NEVER have gone into the profession
in the first place, let alone remain there. For years I taught high school with people who admitted they hated
kids and didn't want to be around them. Yet they continued in the education system until they retired. Kids know
when a teacher dislikes them as a class of citizens,
and they simply can not benefit from such an
arrangement.
