Current model is out of date for today's warfare. The new transport will be more drivable, efficient.
The Humvee is not cutting it.
Designed for a different era and a different kind of war, the military's beleaguered flagship truck is starting to look like the Edsel of Iraq.
Much of the problem was lack of foresight. The Humvee comes in an armored version, but military leaders initially saw little need for it, and the Bush administration did not bet on a prolonged insurgency in Iraq.
Now that roadside bombs have become a weapon of choice, every Humvee rolling off the line at AM General, the Indiana-based maker, is the more rugged kind.

Sell the old ones to the public.
The old Hummers are not road ready--- and the "public" only wants nice shiny ones with air-conditioning and 6 speaker stereos--- unlike the first Jeeps that were sold and used on the roads, which were actual military vehicles.
That would depress the Hummer market even more..
I personally do not think they should make all the new Humvees armoured....they are slow..underpowered...and they really are not a front line vehicle....and they still can be destroyed...
I would take one in heart beat. New hunting truck.
Yeah, but they are ranch and farm ready.
I have two, and my hands use them every day on areas I used to only get to on horseback.
The non-DOT approved versions are cheap --- compared to an F350, for example, run on "orange" diesel (farm diesel, low grade) and nearly indestructible.
I would like a real humvee. The H2 girly cars are really just a GMC pickup chassis with some goofy bodywork that are a real bitch to park.
Yeah they do sell off some of the old ones at Ft. Hood every now and again.
add a supercharger and a suspension upgrade.
off roaders have done it for years.
Right, farms, construction sites, all very good uses, but limited... and certainly not for the average consumer.
One of my dad's friends buys them at auction and re-sells them. (both military HMMWV's and 1-ton Chevy trucks)
I drove his Hummer back on my grandparents' farm last year. It is truly Bad A$$.
ping for later
I got mine at Ft. Bliss (El Paso).
Both had new diesel engines and transmissions and never seen hard labor. All I've ever done for 6 years of hard abuse is add gas and change the oil.
How much does a base model in decent used condition run, typically?
You might have a look at this guy:

Click "vehicles" at the top and see what he has. Mostly Pinzaguers, but a few humvees pop up now and again. Personally, I have my eye on that tank destroyer...
I bet they would be great at those Washington Protests for Gay Pride and Abortion. Put a cattle catcher on it and Weeeeeeeeeee..... Bowling for Bolsheviks.
how cheap?
