Reading this thread, I realize how much Hollywood has ticked me off, and how out of the loop I've become when it comes to films.
I did know that Soylent Green was made out of people, so I guess I'm not totally out of it.
I thought I would give the Hollywood community one more chance, and see how they would treat "The Passion of the Christ" during the award season. True to form, it was snubbed, as they have their own type of what I guess they consider 'acceptable' prejudice.
That was the last movie I paid money to see, and I don't see anymore box office $$$s going to Hollywood via my pocketbook in the near future.

I have not heard any discussion by Rush or Medved and don't care (just read about the supposed controversy here on FR), BUT, I did see the movie trailer for this movie a few times and would have no idea about the end but for what I've read here. It looked like it was just about a woman who becomes a boxer. Actually, I now want to see it as it sounds more complex and compelling than I thought.

I didn't see Lost in Translation. Why did you walk out? A friend of mine was in Tokyo on business and made a beeline for the bar at the hotel where the movie was shot because he liked the flick.
He's done complex and "depressing" (to use your word of choice) or at least not uplifting feel-good movies all through his career.
Same here. Most of the actors/actresses have complete contempt for conservatives and our values so why should I support their leftist habits.
The "prequel", right? Only if Adam West plays Batman SR.....

Man, when did Americans become such whiny babies who need everything monitored and carefully labelled for them? Whatever happened to being open to a good drama, and judging a movie on whether or not it had a decent story, whatever the morality of the characters, or in this case, showing a character violating his own private morality to help another character live by theirs?
All the people bitching about this, I guess they never see movies with bad guys, have never enjoyed a movie in which any character gets killed, don't see Hitchcock or Peckinpah or Kubrick or Spielberg or Mel Gibson-directed movies in which characters KILL other characters--because those movies are "about" the main character killing someone. And they'd never see a suspense film because they haven't been warned ahead of time what it's REALLY about.
Anyone looking at the advertising for Million Dollar Baby who thinks it's not a serious, dark drama but a feel-good happy Rocky picture (from the director of the famous, dark Mystic River and Unforgiven) should stick to watching Waltons reruns.

This one stars Christian Bale who is a very good choice in roles such as Bruce Wayne. He tends to do very dark characters. The film before Batman that he did he lost 63lbs for the lead role. So he is dedicated as well. Anyhow I have high hopes for the movie.
Interesting trivia: Bale and Adam West are the only two of seven Batmans to be as tall as Batman is in the comics.
I am a Bale fan and this just quote just solidifies it.

I wish all actors would keep a low profile. It seems those actors have the most enjoyable films with a few exceptions.

We walked out, because it was totally boring. Bill Murray is a one trick pony. And not at all funny, over and over.
Medved AND O'Reilly? Now there's a brain trust if I ever saw one. I'd rather eat urinal cakes with my morning orange juice than watch these two morons whine about Clint Eastwood's brilliant movie because they were "offended" by it's intriguing plot developements.
Medved especially is a disappointment. What happened to the man who gave aspiring film critics the world over reason to celebrate with his legendary 1980 book the Golden Turkey Awards (and coined the idea that Plan 9 From Outer Space is the "worst" film ever made)? When did he get replaced by a grumpy, obnoxious, rude Hollywood-basher disguised as a movie critic?
Were the body snatchers somehow involved?
I may agree with Medved on a lot more foreign and economic policy issues than the far-left-winger Roger Ebert, but damned if Medved can't even hold a candle to Ebert as a movie critic. "A movie is not about WHAT it's about; it's about HOW it's about it".

While certainly well-acted and carefully crafted, Finding Neverland was a disappointment to me. I think the reason that it never really gained any kind of dramatic traction (and therefore was always a bit at arms length) is because of it's smooth material. The truth is that James Barrie, unlike Ray Charles or Howard Hughes, is just not that interesting a subject for a movie biography. While Barrie did create one of the great works of children's fiction, he also didn't live a life of compelling conflict (and conflict is the heart of drama), at least not as depicted in this movie. Barrie (Johnny Depp) is proper but whimsical and...well...oh so BORING. As a result, so is the film. Unlike Million Dollar Baby and Sideways, FN's Best Picture nomination is a bit of a mistake on the Academy's part.
There's no sex and violence in the movie (as if it really matters in the first place), but there's also no fire or purpose to it. It starts, it ends, and it is over.

Your wife has good tastes then. I thought that Mystic River was the real Best Picture of 2003, and I stand by that claim despite the arguments of the Hobbit-heads at the Academy.

Maybe the producers of MDB avoided giving away the ending because the movie is STILL IN THEATERS. Medved, as a supposedly professional film critic, should have known better than to ruin the movies' surprise developement for millions (the absolute WORST thing a film critic can do on the job) because he wanted to get on his damn soapbox and preach his politics to us. There was no excuse for what he did, and there never will be.
Michael Medved has lost all credibility with paying audiences, and he may not get a chance to earn it back.
Screw him.
According to Kenneth Anger, who wrote Hollywood Babylon, Rosebud was actually William Randolph Hearst's nickname for Marion Davies, uh, private parts. The "sled" was a metaphor. I have no idea if that's true, or not.
