Homeless women get day of beauty
KWTV-News9, Oklahoma City ^ | February 7, 2005 | By Amy Lester

When Oklahomans who live on the street decide it's time to start over, they need help.

The reality is, thousands of people have nowhere to live and little hope for a future.

Amy Lester explains how one organization is giving a group of women a new lease on life.

For 15 women who recently lived on the streets, a new life is right around the corner. Today, they learned a lesson that raises their self-confidence to a whole new level.

It's a day full of pampering -- fit for a beauty queen.

From the shortest hairs to the longest locks, the experts sculpt each piece to fit a new life.

The ladies are part of the Neighborhood Services Organization's program which gives women the tools to get off the street.

Shane Perryman opened up his salon and offered his expertise for free.

The women take away more than beauty tips. An afternoon in the chair boosts their self-confidence ... and prepares them for success.

Words can't express their gratitude.

The organization planned the makeovers just in time for Valentine's Day. The ladies also received some roses as an early gift.

It's a touching gesture, but no good deed goes unpunished.

How long will it take before such beauties start demanding their day at the salon at the owner's expense? Or demanding government funding of manicures?

And we all get to relearn that you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear....

Generosity, common sense and roses...what a combo!

A liberal solution-take a bunch of toothless junkie hookers, and style their hair. I know, they're not all in this category, but there's usually a reason they live on the streets; and a new 'do' isn't going to change that.

Reminds me of the Howard Stern PPV special about 15 years ago, when they took a homeless guy out of Grand Central and gave him a makeover. The guy looked like an investment banker.

If one or two were to take advantage the opportunity and use the clean up to go out and get a job and jump back into being productive, then I'd say it was a fruitful effort.

Who gives a damn ??? Stuff like this just makes me NOT want to give to charity when I see it being wasted on frivolity and useless things.

Toys for homeless children I understand (they get the material good), but beauty times ??? Good grief.

Maybe I'm just getting cynical in my older years, but people live the way they want to live. If someone wants a better life bad enough, they will work hard to get it.

Well, gosh! Did you read the rest of the article? Apparently the owner of the beauty shop is donating his/her services at no charge. So, none of your "charitable donations" are going to this at all.

If this person wants to do some hairstyles at no charge, I guess that's OK with me. How about you?

That's fair enough, I think it's kinda stupid, but so be it.

I don't know which will come first in this upside-down world; running out of lipstick or willing pigs on which to waste it.

They need real job skills and a work ethic. That's not the kind of make-over you're going to find in a salon.

Exactly my thought. When you give somebody something for free, especially losers, it becomes not a gift, but a right.

What a lot of negative replies! This isn't about looking great for a party, it's about looking good for job interviews. Yes, honest hard work is what will help get these people off the street, but a slovenly or inappropriate appearance won't get them employment. Mr. Perryman is providing, aside from the roses, a practical solution to part of these ladies' problems. Who knows-- perhaps one day some of them will help others who need to get off the street. And all without tax-payer dollars.

I wonder how many will come back and sue the owner for some nebulous reason given by a lawyer.

I have just come across this site today and i am a hairstylist in Canada. I am appalled at the disrespect shown to the homeless. Did you know that when your government and ours turned psych hospitals into treatment centers, a lot of the discharged patients became homeless. God forbid that any of you should have to live with a mental illness. These people are emotionally disabled and in the jungle it is survival of the fittest, so we throw them on the street and blame them for their lot in life. That is sad. The Bible says the strong should bear up the weak. I would count it a privilege to give one of these dear souls a day of beauty.
