He's not an officer, he's a sergeant. There IS a difference.

Sgt. Kevin Benderman... Since when did a Sgt. become an officer?

Ummm, OK, I know about NCOs, but this guy apparently is not one, since he is subordinate to a first sergeant. And do they actually call NCOs "officers" anyway? Why, as if I didn't know, would the Seattle Times call a sergeant an officer?

He's 40 years old, and an E-5 (I'm wondering why the Seattle Times headline calls him an officer). He enlisted when he was 30, likely because he had no job skills or any way to put food on the table, and thought the military would be an easy way to get a steady paycheck. And he's only an E-5, after 10 years? A look at his personnel file would likely reveal a career of laziness and poor performance.

I think they meant Non-Commissioned Officer. I know they're "NCO"s, but I suppose technically they are a kind of "officer".

two things...
1, why is Seattle reporting that some clown in GA is a deserter. Doesn't Seattle have enough things to talk about?
2. Officer is misleading. the guy was a SGT, If i remember correctly (and i know I'll be corrected ;) ) that makes him an NCO.
When i read the article i thought they were talking about a general or a COL

No sympathy here. If you volunteer for a commitment, that should mean something.
A draftee is a different matter.

The Seattle Times editor should learn what is an officer.

Letting the MSM press milk this story for anti-morale purposes hardly seems 'concientous'

He's not an officer, he's a sergeant. There IS a difference.Yeah, there's a difference. Based on some recent experience, I expect more from an NCO.
To: clee1
Well through some strange circumstances, I'm a 41-year old Specialist (E-4) at this time. I guess I'm an even dirtier dirtbag!
To: Patriot62
Yet another example that the media is comletely ignorant of all things military.
The guy is NOT an officer, he's a Sergeant. Granted he's a NON-COMMISSIONED officer.
To: Dog Gone
One does not join the military for a education, paychecks, he joins to serve his country. Apparently he forgot.

i doubt they are ignorant. They know the difference, but choose to use the term Officer instead of NCO. Heck NCO saves on print. Their intention was to cause misinformation and to be deceitful.
Don't let them off easy by saying they don't know the difference. These clowns know the difference and did it for malicious reasons
