Oakland County Sheriff Bouchard says he will run for U.S. Senate

DETROIT (AP) — Republican Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said Monday he will make a run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democrat Debbie Stabenow.
"Now is the right time to move forward," Bouchard, a former state senator, said on WJR-AM.
Bouchard, 48, first was appointed as Oakland County sheriff in 1999. He was elected to the position in 2000 and was re-elected in 2004. He served in the state Senate from 1991 to 1999 and served on the Beverly Hills city council in the 1980s. Bouchard has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Michigan State University.
Several political analysts have said Bouchard is a good choice to challenge Stabenow because he can win the votes of moderate Republicans in Oakland County. Stabenow first was elected in 2000.
Others Republicans considering a run for the Senate are Jane Abraham, the wife of former Sen. Spencer Abraham, Detroit real estate developer Peter Cummings, Oakland County Prosecutor David Gorcyca and the Rev. Keith Butler of Southfield. Industrial engineer Bart Baron of Troy already is running.
Rep. Candice Miller, a Republican from Macomb County's Harrison Township, said last month that she wouldn't run.
