SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Tough talking radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger's 19-year-old son will join the U.S. Special Forces later this year - an endeavor that could take him to the Middle East.
Schlessinger, famous for doling out conservative advice on her nationally syndicated call-in show, told about 300 people at a 425th Civil Affairs Battalion event on Saturday that she wasn't too worried about her son, Deryk Bishop.

Excellent. Now if Dr. Laura would get off the air, she really would be performing another great service.
flame bait?
Does she mean he will TRY to join the special forces? You don't just get in because they like you. Otherwise, all the best to him in whatever school he is going to.
God Bless Him.
She might be OK for the "confused chick" audience, but I'm always bummed when I'm on a long road trip and the only talk radio station that gets any reception is carrying Dr. Laura. I'd rather hear fingernails on a chalkboard.
I like her
I'm sure she is a fine person. Sounds like she raised a great son. But hearing her berate the poor, confused souls that call her is unbearable.
Dr Laura is awful. They could hire a robot to do her job.
They do call in and ask for it.
I approve of Dr. Laura's message but frankly can't listen to her unless I'm in a mood that already has me in slap-everyone-I-meet mode. As happens when I have to visit Berkeley or San Francisco, for example. Then, she's the perfect antidote. Really, drive around Berkeley or San Francisco with Dr. Laura hectoring away on the radio, and it's sure to put a smile on your face.
Her son is doing something which sadly should not be extraordinary but is, in this day and age. My thanks as a citizen to him and to his mom, who obviously did a good job with him.
I think she hits the nail on the head most of the time.
Just pretend that Juan Williams is calling Brit on every call.
Not only that, but she also is a big supporter of the miitary. She often encourages young men to consider the service rather than assume that all people should go to college as if it were a right.
Dr. Laura encourages personal responsibility. Its that simple. Those who wish to make excuses for certain behaviors or choices tend to dislike her advice.
She pisses off people who buy the addictive psychobabble that relieves us all of personal responsibility.
I agree she does see to HIT the nail on the head, altho she seems to do it with more than a little delight, and I wonder about that. What amazes me are the people who call in and just ask her to abuse them. Sometimes I think she is catering to those who want to be spanked.
Sheesh I dislike this woman.
I didn't notice in the article anything saying he has COMPLETED any SF training.
***But hearing her berate the poor, confused souls that call her is unbearable.***
It's not like she calls them at home. They call her. They know what they're in for when they start dialing.
I agree. If you've heard 5 minutes of Dr. "Self-righteous Indignation" then you've heard everything she has to whine about. I am totally amazed that so many are willing to submit themselves to the sanctimony and condecension by tbis woman over the public airwaves........
That's right, she is only responding to the audience. I think she actually is right on target most of the time.
So don't listen.
It never ceases to amaze me how many people gripe about a radio or television personality. No one forces you to listen to her. Apparently, there are many who derive benefit from their encounters with her.
I happen to think she forces troubled souls who live by their emotions to think and look at a situation reasonably, like an adult.
I also have to chuckle that you, an unabashed fan of that bomb-throwing insult queen Ann Coulter, would be upset about someone who berates other people.
