Dan Brown sparked controversy with his novel based on Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper - now a French clothing company has followed suit in Italy.

The authorities in Milan have banned a billboard featuring an all-female version of the 15th Century fresco, which the fashion house itself says was inspired by the hotly debated book.

The campaign has run without controversy in both Paris and New York.

But its use of religious symbols could offend Milan, the town hall ruled.

A lot of different companies, bands, etc. have used settings "copying" the layout of the painting before and nobody's raised a big stink. I don't see what the big deal is, personally. I think that most people copying the layout of the painting are simply thinking of it as a famous, easily-recognizable painting, not a religious symbol even though it displays the last supper.

I can understand why the people of Milan would be offended. The original LAST SUPPER is painted on the wall of a friary in Milan. To them it's making fun of a symbol of civic pride. It would sort of be like someone making a poster of the Statue of Liberty with a penis or wearing men's clothes. There is also a matter of the LAST SUPPER being a religious painting too, which shouln't be disrespected. I can see why the Milanese wouldn't be too happy. But I do admit that overall a fashion advertisement is no big deal.
