Overrated/underrated quarterbacks?
foreverfree's vanity | 2/6/05 | foreverfree

On the Baltimore Sun mb, someone suggested Joe Namath as overrated because of SB III (sour grapes maybe?). Someone else on that thread suggested Bradshaw as overrated.

Well, on this Super Sunday, I thought I'd start a thread for those in the know about overrated/underrated pro QBs past and present, what with two QBs entering Canton yesterday. I'm not necessarily in the know (I work) so I won't be chiming in too much if at all. Anyway, fire away!

Over-rated as a quarterback or overrated by his local press (i.e. as in he can do no wrong, no criticism when he does screw up)? I see Rush's commentary is morphing into something he didn't say. You cannot take his presence in the SB now and retroactively apply it to comments made a few seasons ago. The real conundrum for McNabb is that he just may owe getting his act to the next level to that lovable little fuzzball.

And do remember that individual stats are not the sole rating of a QB. Look at Manning ... why isn't he in the SB based on his stats? Answer: it is team wins, not individual stats, that get you to the Game.

What's funny is the eagles schedule this year? Tonight will mark the second time this season that Philly plays a championship calibur team and just like the first, the results are going to be very ugly.

Flutie made a big mistake going to the USFL. He would have gotten on an NFL team and earned a starting job eventually and I agree with you that he would have been one of the greats. I also think Flutie burned some bridges when he crossed picket lines during that NFL strike back in the 1980s.

Still, there was nothing overrated about Dick Butkus. He was the most devestating linebacker of his generation.

Agreed. i think we can end all overrated underrated LB discussion with that -- Butkus was the best -- and this : Most OVERRATED LB in history - BRIAN BOSWORTH.

Did you watch Culpepper against the Eagles in the playoffs? He was awful.

well I just don't think Trent is up there with the likes of some mentioned here......no offense but he didn't do enough overall.....you either have to have great years and win some Super Bowls (modern era) or like Marino, be a prolific passer for many years.......

I think Bart Starr may have been the best ever if you consider that he called his own plays. A completely different era.

Most OVERRATED LB in history - BRIAN BOSWORTH.

Truer words have never been spoken. When Butkus was in high school he saw his girl friend talking with some guys in a car. As the car pulled away he ran across the field and tackled the car, putting himself through the window and punching out the driver, who turned out to be his girlfriends brother. Bosworth was a one-trick pony who saw the NFL as a ticket to Hollywood. He sucked as an actor, too.

McNabb was overrated, but he's developed into one of the top thee QBs in the league.

Michael Vick

Snell should have been the MVP of that game

Thank you! I was saying that for years and people would look at me as if I had two heads.

If they were so smart Peyton Manning would be playing today.

I like Hasselbeck, but I've often wondered if he puts a little something on the ball that make it difficult to catch...heck, even Jerry Rice dropped a few of his passes.

Namath's knees were shot before he left Alabama.
Bear Bryant said he wished Namath's critics could
have seen him when he was whole.

I hate to pile on Drew Bledsoe because he's a decent guy, but his injury was the best thing to happen to the New England Patriots. Tom Brady stepped on the field and has started every game since, taking the Patriots to three of the last four Super Bowls.

Bledsoe is one of the most immobile professional quarterbacks I have ever seen which is why he constantly gets sacked. He puts a lot of stress on his front line. In addition, he's awkward and flat-footed in the pocket, often throwing with his feet flat on the ground (a bad thing). He's also got that "deer-in-the-headlights" look about him much of the time, which results in poor decisions. The few times I saw him this season, I couldn't believe he was still making the same mistakes over and over again. No wonder Belichick never gave him another chance once Brady showed he could do the job.

When he's good, he's good though. He can throw for 400 yards in a single game when he's on. But that's the exception and not the rule.

Although I disagree that Peyton Manning is overrated, you nailed Matt Hasslebeck perfectly. Manning happens to run into the NE buzz saw every year but if the Seahawks let Hasslebeck go somebody is gonna get a really good QB.

That was Rush's point. He said that McN was so good, he didn't need the simpering HYPE given him by the media. At least that was my take.

Plus, at that time, Mc Nabb's performance was down a little. He was still among the top 5 or so in the league.

Bear Bryant called Namath "the greatest athlete he ever coached." IMHO, Namath was not over-rated. I can't think of any other QB who had as fast/quick dropback and release as Namath, and a strong arm. His weakness was his knees. Given strong wheels, he "coulda been a contenda" for the greatest.

In Bear Bryant's book he says that Namath was the best athlete he ever saw and he saw a lot of great ones.

One thing which made me think more of Namath was I read an account of his appearance on the "Brady Bunch". One of the boys said they were really impressed by his good nature and the fact that they got him to play football with them, literally throwing dozens of passes.
