Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager finally wandered out into the public to talk about her drunken-driving conviction.
The Republicans are certainly glad she did.
Following her Thursday talk at a victim impact panel on drunken driving held at Algoma High School, Lautenschlager snapped at a Green Bay Press-Gazette reporter for writing a story describing her February 2004 arrest as a crime. Asked if breaking a state law could be considered a crime to the general public, the first-term attorney general said, "The first offense is a civil forfeiture. You should be careful who you label a criminal."
Talk about writing your opponents' campaign commercials for them.
Within hours of the paper hitting the streets, somebody in the Democrat's brain trust realized the potential damage she had done, and her agency fired off an oh-so-carefully-worded statement that fell just short of an apology.
Saying she has taken responsibility for her actions, Lautenschlager said in the one-paragraph statement: "Comments attributed to me in today's Green Bay Press-Gazette are no reflection on my acknowledgment of the serious mistake in judgment I made last year."
Guess being the state's top cop means never having to say you're sorry.
Drinking buddy of Ohio Supreme Court drunk, Resnick (d).
"Guess being the state's top cop means never having to say you're sorry."
No, being a democrat means never having to say you're sorry. Just ask Chappaquiddick Ted, Slick Willy, Hanoi John Kerry and the rest of them.
I will drink to your leaving darling, when the cold winds of reelection draw near. They say your lips are as loose as your caboose, and that is not a good thing to hear. :)
If I were making that commercial, I'd word it: "Attorney General doesn't understand what constitutes a crime."
Unbelieveable.
Just.... damn.
No, have a woman who sounds like her say "Crimes are for the 'little people'."
If I were making the commercial, I'd have the summary of events, then I'd have the clip of her with that quote ending with "you should be careful who you label a criminal"... then the voiceover "and you should be doubly careful who you elect as your attorney general."
That must be the loneliest job in the world.
As much as I hate to say it, she's right.
What is the legal definition of legal, anyway?
(from law.com)
legal
adj., adv. according to law, not in violation of law or anything related to the law.
That seems to be pretty straightforward- now look at the legal definition of the opposed word, illegal-
illegal
1) adj. in violation of statute, regulation or ordinance, which may be criminal or merely not in conformity. Thus, an armed robbery is illegal, and so is an access road which is narrower than the county allows, but the violation is not criminal.
She did not commit a 'crime', she was merely 'not in conformity'.
I DO wish folks would learn more about the law. Maybe then our government would no longer be able to fool everyone into thinking that IT has the power to define *crime*.
Voters will dump her in 2006.
We can hope. But Peg thinks all that will disappear when she basks in the gory glory of prosecuting Chai Vang. I 'think' WI voters are savvy enough to see her grandstanding for what it is.
Peg Lautenschlager...Making the Streets Safe For Drunken Drivers!
I was thinking broken little piggy bank...
Semper Fi
She'll be re elected, we're talking Wisc, who recently re elected Feingold, of the wonderful McCain Feingold Bill.
That just might work!!!
Remember, this is also the state that brought you Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl . . . . they can say anything and get elected!!
there are no shortage of hypocrites in politics. former SD governor Janklo got off easy for killing a motorcyclist with his car and then bilking the taxpayers for his defense claiming he was speeding to an 'official' gubmint duty.
Tis crime for thee; not for me.
Now shutup, and pay your taxes!
The sad part about Janklow is that what ever the family of the motorcyclist's family gets in the civil suit the tax payers are going to get the bill. When his lawyers talked the court into believing that taking someone to see his old home was Govt. business, what a bunch of BS. Not only that he put off his resignation so as to qualify for the congressional retirement.
those that make the rules should have to play by them.Jerklow made himself an exception.Another RINO.
