Franklin Delano Roosevelt first suggested private Social Security Accounts?
Franklin D. Roosevelt: A Program for Social Security ^ | January 17, 1935 | President Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Posted on 02/05/2005 2:59:47 PM PST by Republican Wildcat

"In the important field of security for our old people, it seems necessary to adopt three principles--first, noncontributory old-age pensions for those who are now too old to build up their own insurance; it is, of course, clear that for perhaps thirty years to come funds will have to be provided by the states and the federal government to meet these pensions. Second, compulsory contributory annuities, which in time will establish a self-supporting system for those now young and for future generations. Third, voluntary contributory annuities by which individual initiative can increase the annual amounts received in old age. It is proposed that the federal government assume one-half of the cost of the old-age pension plan, which ought ultimately to be supplanted by self-supporting annuity plans."

In the documentary, "Dawn of the Dead", they discussed the hind brain and I plan to perform further research on the theory that it can be trained and managed. If this is possible, we may be able to build a more viable Democrat Party.

"Hind brain"?? Is this the right pic to insert at this point?

Corzine (is that him?) is holding Patty Murray up like she's a mental patient, confused about why she's there.

but I do dispute that Nixon-Bush-Bush are Marxists

If you check the percentage increases and compare them to Carter, JFK and Scumbag, you will find that the percentage increases for the HR Superfunction are greater for these Republican presidents than for those Democrat presidents.

Also, even during the Democrat presidents, we often had Congress (or at least the House or Senate), controlled by Republicans.

We have to say--at the very least--that Republicans have done nothing to stem the tide of rising statism in America since Truman/Eisenhower (except for that American hero Ronald Reagan).

Contrary to your opinion, the facts show that Nixon, Bush and Bush have been bigger Marxists than Scumbag and Carter.

Neoconservatives have never had a problem with the New Deal. We always objected to the Great Society. From my way of thinking, if we want to take care of senior citizens, great - they have the right values, God bless 'em. Americans want to see to it they have a dignified retirement in old age.

Those are not % increases in the chart - they are the overall %.

This item was mentioned a couple of days ago on FNC. I believe it was by Brit Hume.

That's a revisionist statue of FDR--no cigarette holder in his mouth. If Congress ever appropriates public money for a monument to Teddy Kennedy, MADD will probably insist he be shown without a drink in hand.

You did not read post #27 very well.

The chart clearly says the data reflects the percent spent on HR as a % of total spending.

I told "Newland" that he/she can go to the OMB site if he/she wished to calculate out the percentages to verify my claim.

I also said to simply look at the chart.

For example, it is quite clear from the chart in #27 that Nixon had a huge increase in social welfare spending. You can tell by just looking at the jump in the columns compared to Ford and Carter.

Never did I say anything close to the columns representing % increases--besides, the chart is labeled what the data represents.

I don't want to be a wet blanket here and I really wish the way the FDR quotes are presented were accurate. It isn't. This is a misread. FDR envisioned the voluntary private annuity program as yet another government run system.

Further, he envisioned Social Security as being self-supporting by 1965--that is the SS taxes collected would be sufficient to cover the annuities paid. (SS payments in the early years had to come from general revenues.)

http://www.ssa.gov/history/voluntaryannuities.html

Man! I hate debunking something I wish were true for my first post here.

Yes, I know what the chart says - that's how I came up with what I said in my last post. You apparently didn't read it yourself.

In any event, you have managed to almost completely take this thread off of the original topic. Way to go.

Hmm. Well, he still apparently believed in private accounts, though, as way for people to save for their own retirement. If SS was supposed to be that, then obviously there would have been no point to this other program. SS is now being used as a complete retirement program, which it was intended to be.

The part in bold type could easily be interpreted as a suggestion for 401k's, I think.
