A better question: why should a Christian be a liar? Of course, he shouldn't. But so many self declared Christians are.A lie in and of itself Professor. I would guess that I know just as many Christians and non believers as you do and my experience is that the distribution of liars is pretty equal across the board.

But if Christians' minimal standard of behavior is to be no worse than the people they're inveighing against, that's not terribly persuasive, is it?

I think that is his point. Since it is a sin for a Christian to bear false witness, why would a Christian sin "in the name of God"?
