I was raised a Baptist, and we didn't do anything for Lent, OR for Fat Tuesday, but now in the Presbyterian church we have an Ash Wednesday service, and observe Lent, but do nothing with "Mardi Gras."

I have always thought of Mardi Gras as being from New Orleans I suppose direct translation is something like Grand Tuesday.

I was raised in an Evangelical Church where we did not actually celebrate any of the church calendar but because the majority of our junior schools are Church of England you get to celebrate them by special services or a visit by your local Vicar or even a trip to the Church that your particular school is linked to. So I am familiar with Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Maudy Thursday where the Queen gives out special coins each year.

Of more recent times because my church has mixed with others more at large events such as Spring Harvest more attention to this festivals is made though not officially they would be taught more and some people would actually decide to give something up for Lent which may not be necessarily something you eat but could be something you do.
