US students barred from aiding snipers

A US university in Wisconsin has blocked an attempt by Republican students to raise money for a group called Adopt a Sniper.

The group raises money for US sharp-shooters in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Students were selling bracelets bearing the motto: "1 Shot 1 Kill No Remorse I Decide".

"Clearly the rhetoric of that organisation raised some questions and we had some strong objections as a Jesuit university," Marquette University school spokeswoman Brigid O'Brien said on Thursday.

The students, representing a group called College Republicans, originally got permission to set up a table at the student union to raise money for US troops in Iraq.

But they chose to promote a group called Adopt a Sniper, which says on its website it supports snipers deployed by the United States armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The group says it "helps real snipers get the real gear they need to help keep us safe".

The brainchild of a Texas police SWAT officer Adopt a Sniper (www.adoptasniper.org) has raised thousands of dollars in cash and gear to supplement the kit of sharp shooters in US combat platoons.

Among products sold on the site is a $15 coin with the imprinted phrase "Assistance From A Distance".

I'm not sure what to think about this being a report on aljazeera.

Just for the record, I think a Canadian from the Princess Patricias' Regiment out of Edmonton made the longest kill shot ever in the 2001 Afghanistan War.

I went to the Adopt a Sniper site and I fould this reassuring comment, "Due to high demand there may be a delay in shipping. We appreciate your patience. For concerns on availability please contact our shipping coordinators before sending payment." This means they are getting plenty of support without Marquette University's help.

This charity sound purposely designed to aggravate liberals who think the word "sniper" is just too evil for any kind of aid or assistance. Part of me says change the name so they'll stop annoying us with their constant whine and part of me says keep it up.

I wonder if this isn't a hoax. Sounds pretty bizarre. But not a bad idea, if true.

I sent a copy to my friend who is a Marquette grad. I wonder what she will say.

I have my doubts about that. Sounds like they made that claim in order to neatly side-step the issue.

Marquette University changed it's nickname from the Warriors to the Golden Eagles in 1994 in a move laced with Political Correctness.

Now they are thinking of changing it again.

Longest in the Afghan War? Or longest shot EVER, in any conflict?

I thought Carlos Hathcock took out a Zip at a record-breaking distance in 'Nam...but my sniper trivia may be dated...

The longest shot ever. It is my understanding that a long standing record was broken.

Record distance sniper kill...

The longest-ever confirmed sniper kill was made by Master Cpl. Arron Perry of the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan during combat in 2003. Using a .50-caliber MacMillan TAC-50 rifle, Perry shot and killed an Afghan soldier from a distance of 2,430 metres.

The record was set during Operation Anaconda when a Canadian three-man sniper team from the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, (PPCLI), set the new record with a shot on a Taliban fighter That's about 1.5 miles. That, my friends, is a truly amazing feat. The bullet was in the air for four seconds and dropped 146 feet. About 250 meters longer than Carlos Hathcock's famous shot.

Hat's off to a well trained soldier from up north.

You are correct that the longest shot ever recorded was in the Afgan war(2001). The distance was exactly 7,972 ft. It was on the Discovery Channel last night.

CRAP! I was a 40 of 40 in the Army myself, but that's one hell of a shot I could only dream of making!
