George Bush finally began his second term on Wednesday night with an address that marked the return of the Bush of the stump, the Bush who was re-elected president three months ago and whom the nation knows well. His State of the Union address underscored that he meant what he said when he ran: Efforts to move against junk lawsuits, protect marriage and reform Social Security are all on the table. America continues as a friend of liberty throughout the world. The speech was marked by an air not of insistence but of persuasion. George Bush made it clear he does not intend to cooperate with the tradition whereby second terms are all anticlimax enlivened by scandal. He will not be at the mercy of history. And, in some roundabout way, I have a feeling that old Fen is not helping his lovely Peggy's cause. When she pops onto this thread, as we all know she will, she will get much more of an earful than if her best fan had attempted his defense of her with respect and ideas.

Well, I responded to the article on OpinionJournal and asked about the "little big man" comment. We'll see if we get any clarification on that at some future point.
Now for a little levity . . . Am I the only person who heard Rush say he had dated Ms. Noonan?
Rush said "I've respected her ever since my first date with her." This is what she said about first meeting Rush:

I'm not out to help any cause. Its called a spoiling attack. The vitrol of the Noonan-haters on this thread is now easily distinguished from those here who have sincere complaints about her work. Thanks for your help.

Not just "some other thread", a half-dozen threads. Search and read, you'll see the pattern. Honest discussion re Noonan's good/bad points are drowned out by the same people launching character attacks against Noonan and against anyone bold enough to say they disagree. Fans discourage and driven out of the thread. Is that what FR is all about. Its like a pack of Buzzards bullying their way through the boards.

I have no idea, but its uncharacteristic. I've had enough of it so I've launched a spoilng attack. Don't like it? Then cease with the slurs and character attacks and allow others to voice their opinion, even if its in favor of Noonan and disagrees with yours. Thats the easiest way to keep me from haunting these Noonan-bashing threads in the future.

Later, my attacks were directed at others who attacked me without provocation. I never initiated an attack on anyone who stuck to criticizing the article instead of launching ad hominem on Noonan or her supporters.

Naw, I gave that a fair shot on the Inagural thread. Same crowd came here with the same talking points. The thread has been derailed b/c you and your kind refused to to attack "with respect and ideas"
This was gentle but pointed, more specific and less messianic, than the recent inaugural--and therefore less open to misinterpretation.
I suppose this is the closest Noonan will ever come to admitting she misinterpreted the inaugural address.

Now, back to the matter at hand. Do you admire Peggy as a writer, or as a conservative ally? If you admire her as a writer, that is your taste. If you think she is an ally, then we are going to have a little discussion about the meaning of that word.
