King Bill to Repeal 16th Amendment to Constitution
Americans for Fair Taxation ^

CONGRESSMAN STEVE KING INTRODUCES RESOLUTION TO ELIMINATE IRS

WASHINGTON - As W-2s arrive in mailboxes this week, U.S. Congressman Steve King has introduced a resolution to repeal the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, which gives Congress the authority to collect income taxes.

H.J. Res. 16 would eliminate the IRS and the means for the government to collect income taxes.

"The IRS is an out-of-date, trillion-dollar-a-year drag on our economy," said King. "Instead of continuing to band-aid our complicated, leaking tax system year after year, we can choose a permanent solution and finally rid Americans of the fat leech they feed their paychecks to."

King has been a long-time supporter of the FairTax, a national sales tax placed on goods and services, which would replace the income tax.

H.J. Res. 16 must be approved by two-thirds of both the House and Senate, and then sent to the states, where three-fourths must ratify the amendment.

What about the social security tax? That tax eats up so much of my income. This year I paid more in taxes than I ever made in my twelve years in the Marine Corps. Let me keep my money!!!

Agree completely. It's particularly hideous that half of your SS tax is paid by your employer and never even shows up on your pay stub. I'm totally opposed to Social Security.

What I'm saying about a direct-pay tax collection system should in no way be construed as implicit support of federal entitlement programs; I'm only talking about the means of collection.

Think about it: when we pay taxes, however we pay them, we are buying something: our government. If you have to hide the payment somehow, wether it is through payroll confiscation or purchase attachment, that tells me we're not getting what we're paying for.

It would be too easy to overlook or forget about the extra 23 cents we pay on each dollar of purchase

But I bet you'd notice all that money in your paycheck each week that you were otherwise never seeing. These Fair Tax will be transparent and revenue neutral. It will always be right out there in the open for you to see. I assure you if you see a $1000 price tag for that new flat screen TV, and you have to shell out $1230 at the register, you'll certainly notice the tax. Also please try to remember that ALL corporate taxes would also be repealed. This is where the hidden taxes are now. Don't ever think that businesses actually pay taxes.

Well, I assume you mean that they are distruptive to YOUR discussions because I don't agree with them, right?

No ma'am. I mean you are disruptive to the discussion because you offer ridicule and insults rather than meaningfull, substantive input.

You intellect and knowledge of different proposals would be both appreciated and respected.

How much more "substantive" can I be? I said it isn't going to happen.

And somehow I get the feeling that no matter what I said, you would appreciate it or respect it.

To your employer it's a part of your salary. If you are self-employed you get to pay the whole lot. Isn't that just grand? Punishment for merit and an achievment never ends.

Hear, hear. And while we are about repealing the sixteenth amendment, we should get the twelfth, seventeenth, twentythird and twentysixth at the same time. The socialists should be thrilled to have the conservatives enact such sweeping reforms. Think of the ammunition it would give them on jobs. Eliminate the IRS and a large segment of the bureaucracy would be unemployed. The job loss would be devastating, the economy would crumble......and some democrat would have hope of being elected to some office. But we really should get rid of the current tax code, it is beyond repair.

I'm all for tax reform; any little bit will help; I hope we get a great bill.

What we won't get is abolition of the IRS.

"The women's suffrage movement lasted at least 70 years, from the first formal women's convention in 1848 in Seneca Falls, New York, to the passage of the 19th amendment."

sure am glad that Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B Anthony and a long list of others didn't feel the way that you do....

If Republicans get rid of the income tax, they'll never get Republicans out of the majority again in our lifetimes.

What we won't get is abolition of the IRS.

That's your opinion.

Now, please give us a clear opinion about whether YOU think we should.
