NRA dials up heat on gun ban in (Illinois)

SPRINGFIELD -- Fresh off its success at poking holes in a Wilmette handgun ban, the National Rifle Association has launched a new legislative drive to dismantle strong gun prohibitions in Chicago and test Gov. Rod Blagojevich's wavering commitment to broader gun control.

Taking direct aim at Mayor Richard Daley's hard-line stance against the proliferation of guns, the NRA package of state legislation would allow residents of Chicago and other communities that ban handgun ownership to legally keep the weapons in their homes for self-defense purposes. It also would hold Chicago and other places with bans liable for injuries that residents claimed could have been avoided had they been allowed to carry handguns.

The gun-rights group was emboldened by last year's passage in the Democrat-controlled legislature of the so-called Wilmette bill, inspired by the case of a resident of the North Shore suburb who shot an intruder in his home and was then charged with violating a local handgun ban.

This year's NRA package would punch a big hole in local handgun bans by creating an exception for residents who say they are keeping the weapons in their homes for self-defense.

It would also allow people to sue municipalities with gun bans for injuries suffered as a result of a crime that they say could have been prevented had they been allowed to carry a gun.

Another NRA measure would strip Chicago aldermen of the right to carry guns as long as the city continues to ban gun ownership by everyone else.

"There's a lot of fear in southern Illinois that politicians upstate don't have the same respect for the 2nd Amendment that we do," said Rep. John Bradley (D-Marion), a sponsor of some of the NRA measures.

Illinois is one of only four states that do not allow citizens to Carry Concealed. Mayor Daley gun laws prevent honest citizens in Chicago from owning firearms. However, Mayor Daley and this city council memebers are allowed to carry firearms. Can you image City councilwoman Dorthy Tillman with a handgun? She has already been cited by Chicago police for improper display of a firearm, and still continues to strut her superior position that she can have a gun but the subjects (citizens) of Chicago can not.

They should forbid Daley and Blowgo to have armed security, as well.

I think Charlton Heston said, "an armed man is a citizen, an unarmed man is a subject". Funny how it's always the Democrat-controlled hellholes that seem to have the most regressive and draconian gun laws, isn't it?

"Give me mine or give up yours." Now that's the way to grab'em in such a place that their hearts and minds must soon follow along! '-)

Good luck. We're trying to improve our CPL law here. Our latest target is eliminating fingerprint requirements.

It's about time someone went after Daley and his idiotic gun ban proposals. You would think a city the size of Chicago could find someone to elect mayor that has an IQ above 75. If you've never heard his honor speak it's unfortunate because when he opens his mouth it becomes readily apparent that he's an inarticulate boob who only has the position because of his daddy. We here in Illinois have to live with him and his antics even if we are outside Chicago.

It's especially bad when our own state Republican Party is so pitiful. How can you ever expect to get some of these entrenched Dems out of office if you spend all your time trying to make sure the next party faithful gets their turn in office, like George Ryan. Then when you do get a viable candidate like Jack Ryan who has half a chance you throw him under the bus at the first sign of trouble. Your assessment of Daley's influence is sad but has a lot of truth to it.

It's tough being an Illinois Republican. It's even tougher being a conservative IL Republican.

Yes we do. I've lived in IL for 10+ years and have never seen such corrupt politics as are evidenced in this state. Chicago politics are so dirty that they make NYC look like a piker. Springfield is a strong runner-up. We need an influx of Republicans back into the City - and of course a way to keep the dead from voting multiple times.

the problem here in Illinois, is that for too long, even the repubs were part of the machine. there was no distinguishing party really, corruption was rampant all over

but, now emerging from the ashes of the dead republican phoenix are a couple bright stars, ie., Steve Rauschenberger and Ruth Munson. Both are full of integrity.

Mr. Rauschenberger has been exemplary in keeping his nose the grindstone, but his lack of funds seems to keep from moving forward. National repubs have given up on our state, not backing our candidates, and avoiding the state all together. This was pretty evident by tossing Keyes in here to run against Obama. It was a sad sight, and he had no chance to win whatsoever.

This is one of those states that I think deals are cut over, you know the type.... we will give you Illinois, you do this or that... at least thats the impression allot of us repubs here feel like.

We are the red-headed step child of the republican party.

I just experienced a new variation on the continued deprivation of the right to keep and bear arms in the Chicago area. I went to the DeKalb county Gun Show this last Sunday with my son, an Illinois National Guardsman. My son saw a real nice AR-15A2 Sporter Carbine for a nice price at the De Kalb gun show this last Sunday. He presented his FOIC and a valid credit card to the gun dealer to close the deal. The gun dealer took a look at his card and said that he could not sell the gun to anyone with a Chicago address. When I pointed out to him that there is no such law forbidding such a thing, he admitted he knew that but that Chicago, its gun dealer investigations, and Mayor Daley's lawsuits have got most gun dealers afraid to sell guns to Chicago residents for fear of heat from King Richard's Chicago Corporation counsel's office.

I was extremely angered, but even though this guy was wrong, I can understand why he feels that way. The power of government and my tax dollars are being used to intimidate honest businessmen and deprive me of my constitutional right to keep and bear arms by purchasing them.

It is beyond belief galling to think that this Mayor refuses to accept absolute responsibility for the massive corruption swirling around the criminal enterprise that he calls his administration, but wants to hold some gun dealer responsible for a gun that he sold 10 to 20 years ago that has gone through three of four different hands. I guess that's what you can do when you are a King tyrant Mayor in a one-party Soviet style County called Cook.

Molon Labe!!!!
