"Hey Daunte, can I get some of that ice?"

What else could Culpepper have done in this situation?

Walked over to the kid, tell him and his parents he could wear them for the rest of the ceremony and get the kid's name and address and then personally deliver someting really nice to him later on...after he'd had a chance to shop for something nice.

But that scenario would first entail Mr. Culpepper having some class and a brain to go with it.

He could have said, "No!"

Personally I think it was pretty rude for the kid to ask.

What else? Let's see - other than what he did (up until the point he took the gift back)? How about grin and offer to meet the kid after - maybe visit with him and give him some other smaller gift.

But the fact is - he publicly gave it to the kid. Then privately took it back.

And I understand the financial value of the jewelry - but dang - what's $75G to a superstar multi-millionaire like Cullpepper?

What a Jerk.

I would think he wanted a snow cone.

For Daunte... Thrown the jewelry at him and missed?

I'm with Culpepper. When a kid asks that, the understanding is that it would be for him to try it out for fun and not to keep it.

He could have made some lame reply such as It isn't mine to give away, meaning he received it as a gift.

I agree with you.
Say no and get reamed by the media?
Right.

he could have said - 'I'll get these back from you in a bit - enjoy them for a moment'.

Time was when kids didn't ask for diamonds from their heros - even if the kid was in a hospital bed. Unfortunately Dante didn't think this through and really goofed. It's forgiveable.

Exactly. Nice to see some other folks actually read the story before commenting on it.
