JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Daunte Culpepper showed off his scrambling ability Wednesday -- in a crowded convention center ballroom.
The Minnesota Vikings quarterback presented a paralyzed high school football player two diamond necklaces worth about $75,000 during an NFL awards ceremony, but then awkwardly asked for them back after it was finished.
The apparent gift prompted a mother to cry, a father to think about buying a safe to store it and Culpepper to find a way out of the mess.
"I'll get him something else," Culpepper said sheepishly.
The confusion began at the FedEx ground and air player of the year honors, where finalists Culpepper, Peyton Manning, Shaun Alexander and Curtis Martin were on stage for the announcement.
When the master of ceremonies opened the floor for questions, Jerry Townsend spoke up from his wheelchair in the front row.
"Hey Daunte, can I get some of that ice?" he said in a low voice, referring to the two sparkling necklaces hanging around Culpepper's neck.
Culpepper jumped up, pulled them off and brought them over to Townsend, a senior defensive back at Jacksonville Episcopal High School who was paralyzed from the neck down while making a tackle in October.

Walked over to the kid, tell him and his parents he could wear them for the rest of the ceremony and get the kid's name and address and then personally deliver someting really nice to him later on...after he'd had a chance to shop for something nice.
But that scenario would first entail Mr. Culpepper having some class and a brain to go with it.
Why yes I am attacking the over rated Favre. He is an admitted drug addict. I say the same thing about Rush Limbaugh. All weak people if they have to use the crutch of drugs.
He ripped into Limbaugh when the stuff with the over rated McNabb thing hit.
Then he should have said 'wear it for a while, but you can't have it'. He gave the boy the impression that he could keep it.
For all you know, Culpepper could have done that. The whole thing reads like another sensationalist hit piece by SI.

You don't have a clue about what you're spewing. There is a big difference in someone who becomes addicted to pain medication while taking it for a diagnosed medical condition and someone who goes and buys some crack rocks from the dealer on the street corner.

That's absolutely right.
So what do you say to people who show weakness (never mind their medical conditions) who find the strength to get off drugs?

You dont have a clue if you think there is a difference in drug addicts. I wonder if Rush and the sainted Mr Favre got all their drugs legally? Weak people who cant control themselves.
I tell them good luck in staying clean. As we all know the %'s of those who go back to drugs.
Agreed. One of my best friends died of prostate cancer which spread to his lymph nodes. Before he died he became addicted to whatever it was (morphine?) they were giving him for the pain. He was so ashamed as he was dying that he tried (unsuccessfully) to fight the addiction. Those of us who have never taken prescription drugs can't understand, and we certainly shouldn't consider those who become addicted to be weaklings.

Culpepper wanted to be nice and, not being a politician or Miss Manners, acted instinctively but by doing so accidentally gave the kid some false impressions. That doesn't exactly make Culpepper evil in my book. I suppose he should have just ignored the kid and avoided all this trouble, then he wouldn't be called all the horrible names people are using on this thread.
Someone who thinks they have the right to someone else's expensive goods just for the asking is the one with the problem with manners. If the kid, paralyzed or not, had any class, he would never even have thought about keeping the jewelry. Same goes double for the kid's parents.
No, you don't. if that was the case, you wouldn't have said what you said about Favre who has been an upstanding NFL player for many years, and has undergone treatment for a problem that stemmed from his long term treatment for chronic pain. I frankly don't think you really have any understanding of the situation.
Is it me, or has FreeRepublic seen a rash of some pretty nasty rhetoric since the election?
