President Bush will deliver his annual State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress tonight at 6 PM Pacific time. A live webcast is available here. According to CNN, quoting a top aide, "President Bush will present 'a strategy for success' in Iraq and outline details of his Social Security proposal."

Judge Michael Chertoff testified during his nomination to become Homeland Security Secretary before the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

President Bush plans a late February trip to Europe to seek additional assistance from the European Union and NATO in Iraq, and to meet with leaders, including German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

There will be lots of photos tonight during and after the president's speech.

Enjoy your visit to Sanity Island!

After the speech, Charles Krauthammer, Brain in Residence as Fox News analyst, pointed out what he called a not very subtle intimation by W that if the Iranian students rose up against the Mullahs, we would be there to help them.

Eight years of bubba and his WINO have turned me into a crass observer. After I got over the emotional reaction to the Iraqi woman voter and the Marine's mother hugging, I thought, The dems are going to be searching for just such a "magic moment" to stage it for political advantage. My political lens is now always filtered with what I learned watching the clintons jerk America around; being a FReeper while clinton was still staining the nation helped me understand how the dems think and how they are always jockeying for position, for the photo op over real life. Thank God they don't have the WH now, and, if they obstruct Social Security reform as they are promising to do, they are positioning themselves for a new look at "exit strategy" in '06, but this one will be from DC, not Iraq.

Did the mother give the Iraqi lady her son's dog tags?????

Yes. I don't know how she could part with them.

Do you (or Mike--anyone else for that matter!) know why the military men in the front row hardly applauded, and rarely stood up thru the whole speech, even when everyone else did?

It's a tradition, as I understand it, based on the separation of military and civilian powers at the very top of our country. The military is there to carry out the CIC's orders and, as a way of emphasizing the separation, they are expected not to show too much enthusiasm. That may seem an unnecessary restraint; consider the message it sends all around the world, that our highest military commanders are deporting themselves in a rather detached manner from the man who holds the nuclear football. It tells the world that they are not easily swayed. Think of nations where the military can rise up at any moment and seize power from the Executive. We have such a restrained military, after some awkward steps in the early years of our republic, that it's difficult to grasp why this is essential. That's because we trust our military not to try to seize the Executive's power, as is done in some countries.

I think we saw the 2nd phase (November was the first) in the end of the Democratic Party as we know it. These people have NO clue, and it is almost painful to watch them keep coming back and making the same mistakes over and over.

I agree on each point.

They've held power for soooo long and done so much damage to our wonderful country, and now the whole house of cards is falling down. If we did not have a very strong leader, as George W. Bush is, the power vacuum would create a terrible situation in America.

"As the women broke their embrace, they became momentarily tangled. Mrs. Norwood reached down to the cuff of Mrs. al Suhail's sleeve and untwisted her son's dog tags, which she had worn to the address. They had become caught on a button."

Laura has impeccable instincts. I noticed her staying deliberately out of the moment with the two other women. Can you imagine how Hillary would have knocked the two of them apart to get in the middle?

We were sharing a brain at that moment. I thought exactly the same things.

Special guest Safia Taleb al-Souhail (L-Bottom) hugs the mother of a fallen Marine Janet Norwood (C) while first lady Laura Bush (C-Bottom) applauds and William Norwood (Top-R), shakes hands with Marine Staff Sergeant John Manuel Martinez (Top-L) during U.S. President George W. Bush's State of the Union address at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, February 2, 2005. Norwood's son Marine Corps Sergeant Byron Norwood of Pflugerville, Texas was killed during the assault on Fallujah, and he was honored during President Bush's speech.

Wow,still up? Got to the computer late tonight and am so delighted to end a stellar evening with The Dose! What a speech...we laughed, we cried, we stood and shouted Woo-Hoo! He gave us a wink, a nod, and a tear or two himself! I was captivated! This man, our president, will not be swayed nor bullied! Just WOW!

one of the President's greatest strengths is that he never accepts the role of victim

That suit would not fit him, would it?

He's kind of like a snow plow, just pushing on through all the blinding fluff the opposition keeps throwing before him, making a path for everybody to keep traveling safely on. They can choose to sit down and freeze, or get behind him. Sitting down and getting yourself frozen is a monument to stupidity but it seems there are plenty of recruits for it.

MEG, thank you for that post at 207. It looked to me like the chain was tangled on the clothes but Brit Hume said she had given the tags to the Iraqi lady.

I was really tired and had to set the VCR to tape the SOTU, then got up to fix dinner and now am catching up. I saw only the very end of W's SOTU so after I sign off will see the beginning. What I saw was spectacular.
