The American Nazi Party has been given permission to adopt a rural Marion County (Oregon) road as part of a volunteer litter clean-up program.
The signs proclaiming the Nazis sponsored them were put up last week.
County officials said they were legally advised that excluding the organization would violate a constitutional right to free speech. Their choices, they said, were: allow the group to join the program, remove all of the signs from the program or refuse the group and risk a lawsuit.
So the hate group was allowed to have two signs which cost the county $250 apiece.
Officials said as long as the group continues to do its twice-annual cleanup, the signs will stay. If the sign is damaged or destroyed, it's the responsibility of the volunteer groups to pay to repair or replace them.
But, the signs did not last very long. Somebody apparently violated the Nazi's constitutional right to free speech and destroyed them.
If this happened in Delaware County I would suspect Charlie Sexton of sneaking out on some dark and lonely night to perform the dastardly deed. I would hope, however, that he would first call me to assist.
This might give Charlie an idea. I don't think our neighbors would mind a sign saying a road was being made spotless by resident volunteers from the George W. Hill Correctional Facility.

Wow! Those nasty felons tore down signs of community-minded citizens, And if they put them up around here they'll get ripped down too.

You know the author was laughing as he wrote that. Personally, I'd love to violate the first amendment rights of a bunch of Nazi nutjobs.

These signs said "American Nazi party"? That's bad, if they would have said "American Democratic Party" it would be saying the same thing, only they wouldn't get torn down as quickly.

Sometimes the Europeans have a more appropriate approach than we do - like on this subject.
Nazi symbols and paraphernalia are absolutely illegal in Germany and, I believe a few other European nations as well.

Chances are they weren't "ripped down" out of a dislike for Nazis. I suspect they now adorn the walls of a teenager's bedroom.

Most of my family on the Dutch side were in concentration camps . In fact, my Grandpa painted pictures in the concentration camp he was in.
My great Grandpa had his head caved in with a rifle butt by German troops on a forced march into Germany toward the end of the war.
On the Scottish side all the males fought from 1939-1945 as volunteers.
But I do not hate them. As there is a Buddhist quote that i now paraphrase:
"Hatred is like carrying around a hot coal with the intention of throwing it at someone"
I do not agree with their politics but I must defend their right for peaceful participation in the political process.
