The new media played a significant role in President Bush's victory, his former campaign manager, Ken Mehlman, told a forum discussion at Texas A&M University last week.
Mehlman, who now heads the Republican National Committee, pointed to cable news, the Internet and talk radio as key factors that transformed the 2004 race.
"Without the Web or talk radio, [a campaign] has no word of mouth," Mehlman told the forum, in quotes picked up by the university newspaper, The Battalion.
In contrast, the top GOP official noted, past presidential campaigns had been driven by the content of evening newscasts on CBS, NBC and ABC.

"RNC Chief Credits Internet, Talk Radio"
It's called Free Speech, and that's why the likes of Hillary have got their knickers in a wad and want to 'get something done' about it.
"FreeRepublic.com, a bastion of right-wing lunacy" .............ping.
Is that why she fainted yesterday?
I hope she didn't faint because she's "with child". That would surely give her a few extra votes! Booo.
I recall a job interview I had with Sen Graham's office - asked him if they were doing opposition research on the net, cause thats where alot of Dems were floating trial balloons. All I got was a blank stare.
Good to the that the RNC is on the ball.
I'm nearly sure that if the RNC did not keep the pulse of Free Rebublic under their scrutiny and observation all throughout the campaign, that Bush would have lost this election. Free Republic was all over Kerry and also a great aid financially and to the spirit of the Swifties.
It was a huge accomplishment fighting the greater and more ruthless than ever bias in the old socialist/liberal/Dem media! A great accomplishment. Bravo to many, but especially to FR.
And I wish I could ping all the old time FReepers to let them know how much I appreciate their participation here over all the years!
If you got a blank stare, it's because they weren't going to discuss what their office was doing with an applicant.
Ouch. Fair enough. I stand corrected and embarassed.
I say that because I know for a fact that Graham's office is "well advised" on what is going on on the internet 24/7.
I think the internet did have the biggest role lately, but the catalyst was Rush. I think of him as a Johnny Appleseed. The first time I recall seeing Rush was on his TV show Clinton was just elected the first time and Rush said: "I'm sorry, ladies and gentlemen. I can't put the word 'President' in front of this man's name....I just can't....(gulp)."
I told my brother: "I love this guy. Who is he?."
It's kind of funny how a lowly, "overlooked by the MSM, farm reporting, local programming, sports", medium like AM radio really started this.
LOL!!
And people, even some conservatives, were stating he was too "hot" for primetime. hehe. Ha! I trust my instincts. I defended the Swiftees because it was the right thing to do even when people said we should keep our distance. Defended Zell because it was a marvelous speech that hit traditional Dems right in the gut with what they knew was truth. Defended my President because he is a good and honorable man willing to stake his Presidency to defend this country. We were rewarded for doing the right thing.
Let see now,
Bill Gates invented the PC
Al Gore invented the Internet
Ted Turner invented cable news
Don Imus, Howard Stern, and Rush Limbaugh popularized talk radio
Maybe the Democrats are the progressives, if they keep it up they are going to progress themselves into extinction.
At that point former President Bush chimed in, "Could I editorialize here about Zell Miller, who I like but who gave the [1992] Democratic keynote speech knocking the socks off of me?
And I loved it later when Zell brought up the old concept of a duel!
Thanks for the ping, BTS! :)
Ya gotta give some credit to CBS! If CBS hadn't finally been caught at a dishosnest use of forgeries to try to fake some facts in order to again manipulate the outcome of an election to ensure a dem victory, millions of honest voters might never have known what a lying scumbag Traitor John Kerry really is. Remember all the "undecided voters?" It was CBS that helped many of us to decide!!!
Yeh, yeh.. but WHO caught' em???....
A proud card carrying member BUMP!
LOL! Right on top of my library card.
Good Article! Thank you for the Ping, Beyond!
