Dems Won't Delaying Gonzales Appointment

By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Democrats won't try to filibuster Alberto Gonzales' nomination to be attorney general but will hold extensive debates in the Senate over his role in developing the Bush administration's policies on treating foreign detainees, the Senate's top Democrat said Tuesday.

"There will be an up-or-down vote," Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada told reporters after the Democrats huddled together for their weekly planning session.

A filibuster, a parliamentary tactic for delaying Senate action, would require Republicans, who hold a 55-44 majority in the Senate, to win over at least five Democrats — or four Democrats plus Vermont Sen. James Jeffords (news - web sites), an independent — to put Gonzales in office.

Reid predicted that at least 25 or 30 Democrats would vote against Gonzales but said "there was a decision made not to filibuster."

Democrats were surprisingly united in opposing Gonzales in the Senate Judiciary Committee (news - web sites), something that was not achieved when they voted on current Attorney General John Ashcroft (news - web sites).

Ashcroft was confirmed by a 58-42 Senate vote, the narrowest margin ever for an attorney general. Democrats' opposition to Gonzales derives "from the nominee's involvement in the formulation of a number of policies that have tarnished our country's moral leadership in the world and put American soldiers and American citizens at greater risk," Sen. Patrick Leahy (news, bio, voting record), D-Vt., said during a Senate debate Tuesday.

Gonzales, who served as White House counsel during Bush's first term, would replace Ashcroft if confirmed. He would be the nation's first Hispanic attorney general.

A vote by the Senate on Gonzales' confirmation will not occur until at least Thursday, after Bush's State of the Union speech Wednesday night, GOP senators said. They said Democrats don't want to give Bush a success to talk about in his first State of the Union speech of his second term.

"They want the bully pulpit all the way up to and after that to try to taint this nominee with the perceived sins of the Bush administration," said Sen. John Cornyn (news, bio, voting record), R-Texas.

Back to outing Joe Wilson's "CIA" wife......

Are you saying a Senator brought that up?

That's one of the investigations the dems are trying to obstruct and hence delaying Gonzales' appointment, IMO.

"They said Democrats don't want to give Bush a success to talk about in his first State of the Union speech of his second term."

Too late. Too bad, dems.

Time to call the Senators......1-877-762-8762

Let them know what we think of their obstructionist way

You bet. I am livid.

I just saw a clip of Reid on MSNBC saying "President Bush's plan for Social Security WILL NOT HAPPEN".

Why is Frist letting this weirdo run the show? You'd think Reid was the leader. Yes, they'll be hearing from me.

OK, there's enough intrigue going on that I tuned in.

Hatch is wringing his hand about the unfairness of it all.

"This man is being treated very unfairly".

Hatch calls on the vote to take place immediately. (it won't, I'm quite sure)

It is suicide for the RATS to block SS reform. They will lose generations of young voters who get the need for reform.

He's a really good man, but he's not a leftist, therefore, I cannot vote for him.

The Dems sure do love to use that word "But"

Cornyn up and I have a hunch his language will be a bit more forceful than Hatch's.

Cornyn harks to free Iraqis conduct their first democratic election on Sunday..the first in many many many years.

No final decision has been made yet, but at least two Democrats — Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., and Democratic Whip Richard Durbin of Illinois — planned to urge the Democratic caucus today to consider filibustering Gonzales' nomination, said a Senate Democratic aide, who spoke on conditions of anonymity.

Go For It Dems !!

This will cost them more then just voters

Cornyn also rubs their noses it it by reminding them that the President won reelection on November 2nd.

think Leahy was about to do a low blow, Specter received the memo by mistake 20 minutes ago, and wanted to insert it in the record. Leahy got up, objected and tried to take it out, but it will go in the record.

Hmmmm .. another Leaked memo huh??

What was it about??

The memo should be in the record tomorrow. Senator Specter asked that it be included in the record.

It shouldn't surprise anyone, Leahy was trying to submarine the nominee. He and the rest of the Democrat cabal are proving the only thing left in the party is garbage. It's time that Democrat with a shred of respect for this country resign the party immediately. There is no honor among thieves.

Janet Reno? They talked about Janet Reno? And it was a discussion that didn't relate to how she should be in JAIL? I am speechless.

My sense, although Spectral was so inarticulate I couldn't follow him, was that Leahy was trying to do so by lying about something. I hope it becomes clear when the transcript comes out.
